@Dlkemp22‌ If you are looking for an instant read thermometer go with the thermapen. It's phenomenal and is definitely the choice of most of the folks around these parts.

If you're looking for a remote thermometer for monitoring food and pit temps remotely while cooking there are several that people seem to like around here. I use this Maverick model and love it.

Thanks for the recommendations! Would you recommend having both of these in your arsenal, one to monitor and another to check instantly. Sorry for the "elementary" question, I'm new to this but am looking to make this a serious hobby!

I use the two mentioned by ChillyWillis. They work great.

The Thermapen is what I use for steaks, turkeys, etc...  I use the Maverick for the low and slows where I can sit the remote unit by me in the house to monitor both pit and food temps.

The thermapen IMHO is a must have. It gives an exact reading to 1/10 of a degree in 3 sec. I use it every day, and have noticed an big improvement in my food since I bought it.

The maverick isn't necessarily a must have, but it sure is nice for those big slow and low overnight cooks. It allows you to monitor both the temp of the meat and the temp of the cooking grate from inside and also to set alarms so that if the temp fluctuates from your desired range (say your fire dies while trying to catch some shut eye) the alarm will ring to wake you up.

I would have both. I've used various instant-reads, but just ordered a Thermapen. I also have a Fluke infra-red, which I find useful, but my main thermometer is an iGrill. As wireless thermometers go, it's been fantastic. Very durable probes/wires, and especially here in Minnesota, I like being able to monitor dome temps and meat temps from indoors on my iPhone or iPad. Bluetooth II is the way to go. Current version comes with two probes, will support up to 4 probes.

For the time being, you have to have an iPhone or iPad. Android version "coming soon".

I agree that both types are very useful. If you don't want to spend the money on a Thermapen, you could buy their Thermopop thermometer instead.  Much cheaper, but it does take a few more seconds to read the temperature.  I have both the Thermapen and the Thermopop and would be happy if I just had the Thermopop.

Having a wireless thermometer is a must. My old cheap one flaked out this week and my ThermoPop was delivered this morning. Looking forward to using it on my ribs later today. Now having a pit monitor also is very handy to know what's happening without lifting the dome. I'm using a CyberQ pit controller and watching the action from my iPad, it's a real luxury item.

    @Dlkemp22‌ , here's a link to Thermoworks.

They make both the Thermapen and ThermPop. If money is an issue, get a ThermoPop. If you want the best, get a Thermapen.

I use a ThermoPop and love it. If your gonna cook a lot of things at nuclear temps, shaving off two seconds with the Thermapen will save a lot of arm hair. Either way, both are good.

I appreciate all the responses, I am going to go with the thermapen and either the Maverick or possibly the igrill. Thanks again!

Maverick ET-732 has worked very well for me. Even outdoors all day at -25 to -30 below zero. No issues at all. Wireless receiver has given me good signals 300 feet away in my yard.
From what I've read, just don't immerse the probes in water. The probes clean up nicely with a sponge.

I have a Maverick (ET73 I think). I used it about 6 months ago. Before that, couple years maybe? No real reason, I just check from time to time and use the Tpen. For long slow cooks, I use a digiq.

Also, if you have any hearing loss, don't expect the Mav to wake you up. I can barely hear mine when I'm awake and holding it up to my ear!

If they had had the Thermopop when I bought my Pen, I would have bought that instead.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I recently bought a Mavericks LED light. Huge disappointment. Cheap, poorly designed and poorly manufactured off-shore import. For $29. Likely their wireless thermometer is of a different concept, but it kind of soured me on the brand.

Actually, the wireless thermometer is pretty much a cheap offshore POS too. So far so good after about 4-5 years, but I doubt I've used it a dozen times.

Yeah, OK then. I've been that route with the Taylors. Never again. I currently have the original version iGrill. It's been bulletproof, and even the probes have held up great. My only complaint has been the struggle with that version of Bluetooth....finding the device and reconnecting when starting up is occasionally an issue. I also have the newer $39 single probe iGrill that uses Bluetooth II and that one hooks up immediately and has about twice the range.

One tip on the original iGrill....the white version might not be the best for outdoor cooking. The numbers don't show up well against the white in sunlight, and it shows every stinkin' fingerprint after loading charcoal.
