Smoke Ware Cap Gasket Question

For those that have a smoke ware cap. Did you put the Gasket on the cap or the egg. Either way better? Thanks in advance.

I prefer inside the cap! That way when you do a burn out you can remove the gasket from harms way.

Just for clarification that gasket needs to go inside the neck or male part of the SmokeWare, not the cap or female part.

I read the directions and didn't like the idea of the gasket on the egg, so I did it on the cap. works great
Large BGE in a Sole' Gourmet Table
Using the Black Cast Iron grill, Plate Setter,
and a BBQ Guru temp controller.
Medium BGE in custom modified off-road nest.
Black Cast Iron grill, Plate Setter, and a Party-Q temp controller.

Huh? The neck part inserts into the cap part...that is why I called the neck part the male and the cap part the female. Guess the operative terms here were...neck...inserts...into...cap. -

This is what threw me. I was thinking the neck or top of the Egg being the male part and the SW being the receiving or female part. I did the same as RRP as it allows me to move it between my XL and L if I want to without having a gasket on each Egg (which I didn't care to do anyway).XL, Large, Small, Mini Eggs, Shirley Fabrication 24x36 Patio, Humphrey's Weekender, Karubecue C-60, MAK 1-Star General, Hasty Bake Gourmet, Santa Maria Grill, Webers: 14" WSM, 22.5" OTG, 22.5" Kettle Premium, WGA Charcoal, Summit S-620 NG

I made the mistake of sticking the gasket on the Egg. A few high heat cooks melted the adhesive and it leaked down the Egg. I installed one on the cap for my XLBGE, but my MBGE came with a gasket already installed on the egg. So far, no problems.

My smokeware gasket is on the egg. Wrapped the thermometer on accident this winter, cracked the egg, gasket is fine.

I put mine on the egg. If after you want to wash the cap as I do 3 times a year.
The wash wont damage your gasket when there is no gasket on the caps neck.

question, I just got the Smoke Ware Cap, and have installed like everyone else. Do you guys still remove the Cap after cooks and replace with the Ceramic top when not in use to eliminate the humidity entry into the egg?

<br/welcome to the forum. I just shut the SW cap to shut down the egg. Of course my ceramic is in about 100 pieces, so there's that. I just close the bottom vent of my egg and the chimney cap to shut everything off. thanks! Im a fairly new EggHead, bought my Large BGE this summer...and the only regret I have is not having heard of it sooner!!!
I was on a couple of other forums and decided to jump on this one after seeing the Eggtoberfest video. I am still learning a lot about cooking with the Egg.., I was having moisture issues, couldn't get the Egg past 500... Decided to buy the Smoke War Cap and love it, just wasn't sure if it was good enough of a seal to just bypass the Ceramic top when not in use.
look forward to being a member and hopefully being able to contribute in time...until then...ill leach off you more experienced EggHeads.

@scruffee81 keep asking questions here and I'll promise you'll get answers. Sometimes conflicting ones, but choose what's right for you and try it. We all have different ways of doing the same thing.

I've noticed personally with my large egg that if I open the chimney cap all the way and the lower vent all the way I'll be in the 500-500 degree range. If I need to go hotter than that, I removed the chimney cap completely and use the lower vent to control temp. Just a thought if you were trying to get over 500. If you want/need a ceramic-like seal, then you might look at this thread. I've had good luck with the lid I made from plywood, so it's an easy thing to try.
