If it's flaking and only cosmetic I wouldn't even worry about it. Unless your flaking looks like @fishlessman small egg. Maybe he has the pic available"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

Flaking inside or out? If inside, have you done a clean burn? It could be a build up of crud that may burn off. If it's outside you'll need a new top. 375 + a new top is still a very good deal. Pictures would help.XL BGE; Medium BGE; L BGE

Here you guys go sorry for the delay

Still hard to tell if it's ceramic chipping off or black crud. I would load it up with lump, take the top cap off and open the bottom vent all the way. I would remove the thermometer. Light it and let it burn until the lump is gone. When you open it up after it has cooled down you will know if you need a new top or not. You may ruin your gasket but @rrp can fix you up with a new better one.XL BGE; Medium BGE; L BGE

I will try to do a high temp burn the only thing that makes me believe it's the ceramic chipping and not just the cresol is its not smooth like the rest of the dome is .

Thank you so much

Hard to tell but I think it is just the black build up. Either way, as long as there are no cracks I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would just cook on it and enjoy.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

+1 with @SmokeyPitt Unless it's structurally compromised I wouldn't worry about it.They/Them

Had the same issue inside one of my old larges. Never became an issue while I owned it. Just take a look at it every 6 months or so. Keep the pics you took for comparison. Welcome! & +1 at what @SmokeyPitt said if no cracks and there is no breach of structural integrity let it roll & egg on.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL
