Got my rutland gasket from RRP here on the forum at a great price. Then another $22 later for permatex and the paint/rust stripper. Can't wait to get her on.

$22 more? Permatex should not have been more than $8 so you must have bought the Mother of all strippers! LOL. Last time I bought one I paid about $5 bucks! Oh well...don't throw that stripper away as apparently it is a big one and can become a hand me down or inherited tool from a favorite uncle!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

The permatex was $9 and the 3m stripper was $11 LOLXL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.

The 3M stripper is an expensive little bugger if you can't find the generic version. I got stuck with it too at $12. Works well for this job, so I'm glad I got it.

$3.99 for the one at Harbor Freight (if you have one in your city):

Just put the Rutland on. Took a whole 20 min. Guess I did it right because I have about 1.5" left over.XL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.

Just did the dollar bill test. There is very slight resistance when pulling her out. Should I adjust the dome or leave it as is?XL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.

Hey Ron! Do I need to start a small 250-300deg fire for a few hours? I read several places that I do, but in your instructions you don't mention it. I won't touch the grill until tomorrow night.XL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.
-
No the small fire was used to cure the Rutland brand adhesive which was a latex product. Permatex is a silicone. What you read elsewhere were my earlier instructions paraphrased on TNW site.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Just curious about the install. Do you just use the wheel to clean the surface and then apply the new adhesive and gasket? Seems that I have heard it is a several hour process?????Albion, PA
-
To be honest with you, after I did a cook last night I simply peeled off the gaskets while the egg was still warm.
This morning I used the wheel for about a minute just to clean up any residue that may have been left behind. From the time I squirted the permatex for the first time to the time that I was completely done was approximately 20 minutes. Also I did not waste my time scraping off any glue or residue that may have been on the top domeXL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle. -
Yes the wheel removes the old gasket and any residual glue or grease without any damage to the ceramic. As for the length of time to install it depends more on the individual. His application time was extremely short so he must move pretty fast. Where the time element lies is with the "bunching" process which makes the Rutland both wider and thicker. I always suggest a person not rush the process since when done properly that gasket will last many years. One of mine is now been on 9 years!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
-
Damn Ron, now you're scaring me I hope I put it on correctly LOLXL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.
-
Ron, look at the pics and let me know what you think. The gasket is bunched together and covered the entire surface if the egg. I only had about 1.5" left over which is what you said you should have left over after installation.XL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.
-
Didn't mean to scare you or imply anything! Your application looks good. Just like anything else some people work faster than others. I just hope you are keeping your done closed except for the picture taking time. The weight of the dome is an important part of the curing in place process.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
-
Yes the dome is closed. Did you read my earlier post about the one dollar bill test? Do you think that the Dome is putting enough pressure on the gasketXL bge, Mini max & 36 BS Griddle.
-
It should be sufficient - besides what the dome weight is also doing is pushing down any hills or ridges in the Permatex so that it cures while gripping the gasket fibers. I see no signs of oozing through your gasket so it would appear you spread it at a uniform thickness. Don't worry about initial smoke leaks unless excessive of course since with each use the escaping smoke and dust from lump dumps will even fill in the minute spaces in the gasket. You'll be fine!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

LOL - it will be fine...I should have asked...tongue in cheek of course...so no one gets offended...but didn't your Mother or at least Father ever say "Son - don't keep checking your thingee - it will be just fine if you don't play with it."??? Same applies to a curing gasket, my friend! LOLRe-gasketing America one yard at a time.
