Got a bag of Royal Oak at Ace. Nothing but shake and I have 15 lbs of pork to cook. Assuming the problem was the way Ace handled the bag. But it is pretty much unuseable. Hope I can maintain a good temp.

Once you get it rolling you should be okay... Just a few tips.
When you get lump; buy at least 2 bags just in case. Always better to have more on hand.
Use a wiggle stick or the ash tool to rap on the fire grate and clear the holes so you can maintain temps better as the cook goes along.

Good luck!MSV Chill Spot

Considering how many bags of RO i have used, this sounds very unusual??? I always check the bags i buy for holes or beat up bags thinking the lump could be crushed. Now i'll be squeezing the bags!!

I always molest my bags before I buy them. This is more than likely store handling error. I've seen bags of cowboy all busted up and ripped open at our lowes. That's not a slam on cowboy but on the lazy dude stocking te shelves._______________________________________________XLBGE

The bag looked good. Will start getting lump from my BGE dealer. A bit more expensive, but always good quality.

Go buy 20 pound bags of cowboy. The last bags I got were as big of pieces as wicked good but not quite as dense. I am getting more soon and will take pics but royal oak 8.8 pound bags are not very good compared to alternative 20 pound bags. I will never buy royal oak again.

All I use is RO.. Shake still burns - just takes a little longer to get to temp. I'm used to shake, as I think the bags I buy get thrown around lots. I try to find a few larger pieces (3" square) to put on the bottom and then dump the rest.... It works, just takes a little longer to get to temp.
The other day I opened a bag of RO and it had hole bunch of large pieces, so dumped it in (not used to it) and lit... Wow - got really hot fast, (not used to it) overshot temp and had hard time lowering temp.
I guess it's what you're used to.... But it all burns

I tried a bag of 20# Dragon Breath and it was all small pieces and the last I will buy. I have nothing but good reports on Royal Oak. I haven't found any as of yet.

Ozark and Wicked Good are the only way to go. I have used Cowboy, RO, Kroger, publix, and BGE and there IS a diiference. Not only in the size and density of the wood, but also how quickly it gets to the burning clean stage, and the taste of the final product when not using a smoking wood. It costs more but to me it is worth it.LBGE AR SMALL BGE WOO RING
