I'm hoping to find a good source of quality lump charcoal around the Chicago area. Would buy 40 lb bags and would like to pay under 75 cents per pound. Any suggestions?

Brookhaven Marketplace in Darien on Cass Ave. has 40 lb. Nature Glo lump (which is the same as Royal Oak for under $25.00 per bag. I have been buying it there all year and it is fantastic lump. It is the same lump that is sold commercially to restaurants.

P.S. I just bought some there yesterday so I know that they have quite a bit in stock.

i may have to check them out.. i just buy mine at wallyworld

Yep, I can get Royal Oak at Walmart, close and cheap. Plus RO seems to get good reviews. Am hoping to find a source with larger bags than 8.8 lb with hopefully a slightly better deal on larger bags as long as it is as good or better than Royal Oak. Also, response to Grif, Darien is a long cruise for me, as I'm in the northwest suburbs and make occasional trips to Chicago N and NW side, but if I do go that way someday will keep Brookhaven Market in mind, thanks.

Check Ace hardware online. They will ship for free to your local store and often will email you coupons (sign up for their email list). They carry Wicked Good which is considered by many to be better than Royal Oak.

the ace's in the sw burbs have had close out deals on the big bags of cowboy lump

I've gotta check out Brookhaven in Darien. That sounds like a great deal. I have bought the same lump at Berger Bros in the city for $20 for a 40# bag. They are only open during the week and cash only but a great deal. I agree with Grif. Nature Glo is great stuff. If Brookhaven has it, that's a lot closer to me than going to the city.Clarendon Hills, IL

Thanks for all the good feedback!! Will check these sources and keep stocked up on lump.

Was on the north side on Friday and stopped by Berger Bros got 80 lbs of Nature Glo lump at a great price. Will keep this as a favorite on GPS for anytime I get back that way.

rb, interesting experience atBerger Bros., isn't it? Like a throwback to the 50s. You'll love the lump though.Clarendon Hills, IL

definitely plenty of stock still at brookhaven.

I too live in the NW burbs and stop at Berger Bros. when heading downtown (easy as it is right off the HW) When I lived in the City, one of the delivery guys for them lived in my 'hood and we all got free HW lump anytime we wanted! (did not have an egg then)

so what is the price of an 80lb bag there? next time i go that way i may need to stop there if it is worth it.
