A little while ago i was with some friends who cater events. He had a plate that he set on his burner to give an even heat and not burn the bottom of the pot. Could this have been a pizza stone? Maybe a thinner one?
Doubtful. Probably a piece of refractory material or asbestos. A pizza stone isn't thermal shock resistant - it's ceramic. Not having seen it, I'm just guessing.
