I am purchasing a Large BGE next week to replace a medium BGE that I have used for 6 years and considering replacing the grate with this stainless steel grate. Does anyone have this and find it to be that helpful?

I have one, just installed it the other day but haven't cooked with it yet. Whiz has one and says he likes it. -RP

I've had one for a couple of months now and like it a lot. Here's my full review:

Dave- That is a great Great Grate Upgrade review and I am grateful that you posted it. :P

Seriously tho...it sounds like a "really really good" upgrade.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Really like the high-que grate. Just be careful when stirring the lump/ash if your tool gets caught it can move it to the side and allow ash to fall in to the bottom. Otherwise its fantastic.

    I "KINDA" have one!

We had friends comming over one night and wouldn't you know it, as I was getting ready to light the large egg, the fire grade deceided to crumble. So, in a pinch (and after reading about the "Great Grate") I pulled the grill grate from my mini (it was old and the coating had started to flake off anyway) and used it as a fire grate in the large egg.

I do like it ALOT. It really breaths well and gets up to temp in no time!!

Not sure how long it will last as the grill grate was not designed for the high heat, but it was a quick fix and works well!

Thanks for all the quick responses. Anyone have any input on low and slow cooks with this yet?

    That's a great idea.

I have one and like it a lot. Won't go back to the original, and would buy another for my small if they made it that size.

I put a three bolts on it to keep it from moving around when I stir or light up. The egg heats up faster. Only downside is I have to clean out the bottom more often because small lump falls through (instead of sticking and clogging up the holes).

Low and slow just fine. Pork butt still tastes like pork butt.

Just installed one, I'll be firing up a spatched, jerk brined chicken later today along with some corn... Be interesting to see if it fires up better at 7200 feet... mo' air is always mo' better up here... and I have some stainless bolts/nuts - I may have to try that support if shifting is a problem.
  • Like Smokey I kinda have one also.

    I got a 12" grate for 3 bucks.

It sits about 2" higher than original grate.

    I grill therefore I am.....not hungy.

  • I have yet to do an overnighter with it, but I did 5 hours at 225°F and she held like a charm.

I've had one a couple weeks now, I actually got it for high-heat reasons rather than low-n-slow (I can't get my Large higher than 650) but I haven't done a pizza since installing it (95% of my caloric intake right now is tomatoes, while the season is still here).

I have had the High-Que fire grate for about a month now.  I love it.  It gets the temp to blazing temps fast and also does great for low and slows (I see no difference between the original fire grate and the High-Que one during low and slows).  The High-Que blows the original one out of the water for high temps and getting high temps fast.  No comparison.  I also see no difference with the amount of lump I use.  It is the same for both.  The High-Que was delivered fast and is built to last.  Very high quality.

Last night I left my Egg going full throttle and forgot about it for 30 mins (was watching a game).  I came back and the Egg was at about 1,300 degrees.  I was doing a TRex steak and put the steaks on for 60 secs (I usually do it for 90 secs a side depending on thickness and temp) a side using my GrillGrates (love the GrillGrates-highly recommend these also) because the temp was so high.  Steak turned out great.  My point is the High-Que did a great job and performed well at those high temps.

Naked Whiz's review on it was spot on.  I can high recommend it.

I finally got a pizza made on my Large this evening, and RAWK!  That High-Que let my Egg reach temp very quickly, and by the time I had the pizza ready it was up to 800 F!!  Pizza was completely cooked in less than five minutes, Neapolitan-style here I come!
I'm a bit concerned about how many small pieces fall thru the grate, and then burn on the floor of the Egg itself.  Sure, the heat goes up and contributes to cooking, but I don't know if the ceramic in the Egg "shell" is the same as that in the firebox.  It is guaranteed, but I suppose the High-Que would be considered an "unauthorized mod" if the outer shell ever cracked.  Still, I haven't heard of that happening, so I'm going with it.
Very, very happy with my new mod!

What about the time required to get a clean burn? If I get to temp twice as quick and the smoke still stinks, it is not ready to cook. Is this a concern?

I have had them on my two larges for about six months and love them.  I wish BGE would make them standard equipment.  I will buy one for my small if they ever offer them.

  • I bought the grate and I'm not crazy about it. When I smoke a pork butt it usually takes me about 2hrs/lb so a 10lb butt would be about a 20 hour smoke. I tried the new grate last week and after 17 hours I noticed I could barely get 225F because I was just about out of charcoal. It is actually too efficient for me!

I did some searching on the Internet and found this cast iron grate which happens to be the same diameter (9") as the HiQue grate. What is everyone's thoughts of this one? See pic. I found it on eBay for $25 delivered.

I have the kick ash basket that I used it without the charcoal grate.  Like the hi que grate, it also adds excellent air flow.  However, I got the flameboss for Christmas and the better airflow prevented the pit controller to hold the temp.(the fan was never on while the temp kept climbing)  After adding the original grate under the ash basket, the pit controller works.

Have owned 6 Eggs (sold two of them). All 6 had High Que's in them. I like them.
