In general, how high should I fill up my egg with lump,,some say halfway up the fire ring,,that seems like a lot to me but ,,I do mostly ribs and whole chickens,,haven't tried a pork butt or brisket yet,,I'm waiting for my temp ctrl unit to arrive..

It depends on hoe long you are cooking for. If I'm doing a overnight low and slow, I go halfway up the fire box. If I am doing a quick cook like burgers or steaks, I go just over the air holes in the fire box. If it's a chicken or something that will take over an hour I will go almost to the top of the fire box."Pork so tender you can pull it with a spoon." ~Spoon

I fill it to the top of the firebox as that is what it is designed for. Control the temp with the vents. For a long low and slow, almost to the top of the fire ring.

I keep mine filled anywhere from the top of the fire box to halfway up
the fire ring. Stirring it up and adding more as needed before every
cook. Sometimes I don't even bother stirring. Keeping the same level of
charcoal lets me use the same vent settings and get more consistent
cooks. The only time I empty and start new is when I do a low and slow
or had something that dripped a lot of grease. -

Why be concerned about putting too much lump in the Egg? Simply put out the fire when finished and there will be no waste.
