How important is the gasket, if it's starting to burn away ?

What's a gasket?
Haven't seen on in 4 years... you'll be fineKent Madison MS -
I have had a large with a ten year old gasket, recently replaced it on the bottom only.

This. Mine still cooks like a champ. Would it be better with a fully functioning gasket? Surely. Do I miss it? No. -
Not in my opinion. But it's all up to how you want to use your BGE I guess.
I went over a year with my gasket cooked to ash and got stupid and put on a new gasket...now I use more lump than ever and am constantly adjusting the lid, etc to try and get the perfect fit...the one I had when the gasket was burned up. I would NEVER EVER change another gasket...I'm tempted to even try to burn this one off, ha.
Others may disagree. I don't do low and slow for instance other than ribs occasionally so I cook a TON with my lid up anyway. I prefer NO gasket. If you do not have a gasket then you cannot have gasket problems.

Novel approach there, Hoss.

So with you! When my original "melted down", I just loosened the top band, pushed and wiggled the top to get a good even seal, tightened up and kept on cooking.
I do understand the OCD type that can't do this. Totally respect their needing the perfect gasket.
Life is just too short for me to worry about those things... man, there is a lot to cook!!!Kent Madison MS -
8 eggs and maybe 3 of them have what I would consider a complete gasket. one is a new egg in April and the other two we replaced last winter LOL our med here in Maine is nekid and the bands are out of alignment and clank every time we close her. so no I guess not important to use for reg use. but my lg we did replace the gasket so it would seal better for long low and slow

Amen!

Thanks Tony.Gaskets just are not worth the hassel and worry to me.

I have had my large egg for about 4 months now and I've been cooking low and slow for that entire time.
About 8 weeks into this ownership thing, I did a high heat clean that pretty much toasted my gasket.
All I can say is that I'm still cooking just fine with remnants of the OEM gasket and I'm not yet convinced that I need to replace it.
If my cook results suffer drastically and I can't point to a reason other than the gasket, then I'll replace it, but until then, I've got things to cook, deserts to eat, and beers to drink.
YMMV
