Egg \' Burn Off\' unsuccessful, Help

Confession: my XLG is a filthy egg. So after a rib cook today, I thought I would do a high temperature 'burn off'. There was still burning lump to which I added more lump until the fire box was 1/2 to 3/4 full. I removed the daisy top and opened the bottom vent wide open.

It certainly cleaned the plate setter, and the grates, but the inside of my egg is still pitch black. I tried to scrape off the black stuff, but nothing would scrape off. What gives? Others have posted pics of pristine eggs after a cleansig 'burn off'. What did I do wrong?
