I'm reading a book on the rise and fall of prohibition, and this little piece of history should throw fear into your hearts!
Dr. Benjamin Rush of Philadelphia was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a respected scientist, friend of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams...and insisted he "knew of a drunk who had made the mistake of belching near an open flame and was 'suddenly destroyed.' "
Any belchers out there?

sounds like a test for the Mythbusters! Of course years ago they dispelled the myth of death from gas coming from the other end! :laugh:Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

...but it's still fodder for cartoons about someone holding a lit match at that other end...and getting ready for a BOOM!Judy in San Diego

It's my understanding we have some "Gassers" out there...

I am just speculating here, but "belching" as related by the esteemed Dr. Rush perhaps had a different meaning than we would interpret today. As in intestinal belching.
As I recall from my reading several years back on the Lewis and Clark expedition, Lewis studied under Dr. Rush prior to setting off on the grand journey. At the time Dr. Rush championed the use of his "purging pills", also known as Thunderclappers, for multiple aliments. Mythbuster results notwithstanding, the good Dr. may indeed have witnessed what he claimed. Entries from the Lewis and Clark journals indicate taking Thunderclappers in no way compared to the mild effects of eating say, baked beans. Much more severe if you follow what I'm saying.
At any rate, practicing good etiquette whilst the Egg is lit should also keep you safe.
Kind regards,

Don't you believe those old stories. Truth be told, I was pushed out by a more than slightly overweight flight attendant. Without any money! Still trying to track her and those culpable pilots down.LBGE, LBGE-PTR, 22" Weber, Coleman 413GGreat Plains, USA -
That must have been during Hoss's pepper tasting
