My wife and I are heading to New Orleans next month for 4 days. My only visit there was in-and-out for a Super Bowl and gave us no chance to try places. Last year when we went to Washington,DC we got some great recommendations from forum members. My only guidelines would be:
1.- No BBQ places unless it's really unique.
2.- We aren't looking for the usual "touristy" places unless they're exceptional.
Thanks.

The ones I gave you are some great places. I can also recommend a few others, but these are my favorites.
They are best saved for the evening meal. If you'd prefer lunch places I have a few of them too. Kinda hard to eat lunch at these and still be hungry for dinner at the ones listed above. -
a must place is the acme oyster bar......
Large egg and mini max egg plus a Blackstone griddle
South Ga. cooking fool !!!!!!!!
-
I don't mind a great lunch and a smaller dinner. It's better that way for drinking. LOL.
-
It's been a while since I have been there but I always liked Galatoire's. They take no reservations but it's an "equal opportunity" line outside. Also, I liked Felix's just as much as Acme.

I mean ya'll are lucky dogs gettin to go to NOLA for 4 days.Have a BLAST!!!
-
We've wanted to go back there for years. My wife won a free trip there from Harrah's Casino here in St Louis. Our schedule is crammed but we weren't about to pass it up.

Remember you asked. My favorite New Orleans lunch places.

Acme is still the only place in my life I was served bourbon in a tiny plastic disposable solo cups.
I went through lots of those little cups. Great oysters too. -
CONGRATS!!! :woohoo:

Pascals is great.....the BBQ shrimp is what to order
It really is not barbecued but comes is a awesome sauce that you will use your bread to soak up all the great flavor
And this is away from the tourist area which is also a plus for me -
bbq shrimp was on my "to eat" list. Thanks.
-
2nd dat....some good oysta eats at ACME. Dickie Brennan's was tasty too
-
Palace Cafe is one of my favorites. If you're brave, head to the back of the Quarter and eat at Port of Call on Esplanade. Best burgers ever and some potent drinks.
Bucktown, near Lake Pontchartrain between Orleans and Jefferson, used to have a lot of great seafood places. Sadly, Katrina washed most of them away. -
Here ya geaux......
I'm a life time New Orleanian, born and raised in Gentilly.
If you want a real taste of New Orleans food, that is not a tourist trap, I can't think of better place then Mandina's on Canal St.
As you know we are loaded with fine restaurants, but my very favorite is Mandina's.
If I only had one place to take a guest to this would be it.
Trust me on this one it's awesome.

I bed to differ. Bucktown is alive and well. Sadly West end is no longer there. Rememeber these.
Fitzgerald's and Brunings You could walk into each of them and the only thing different were the names on the menu. Other than that the food was identical. I use to love going there with my dad for boiled crabs.
Bucktown favorites.

It's been awhile since I've been to Pascal's. (2-3 months)
I might have to revisit just to assure their quality hasn't suffered. :woohoo: -
If you end up bourbon faced on s@$t street you have to go to yo mammas for the BEST burger and loaded baked potato!!! Also, central market grocery for a muffalata.
-
I second Mandinas on Canal Street. Almost all locals. But last time I was there they didn't take credit cards. Also one of the most reasonable places to eat. For a fantastic night out try Commanders Palace.
-
-
They are good, but get the olive stuff on the side.
-
Best po boys in NOLA!
-
I would also have to second (third?) Mandina's. I've been going there since the early 80's when they served draft beer in ice cold fishbowl glasses. Sadly they don't have those glasses anymore. You have to try the turtle soup, it's fabulous. It's one of the great places that locals go to regularly. No credit cards, but they do have an ATM inside.

I'm glad to hear about Bucktown. Last time I was there it seemed that Deanies was the only place left and, at least at that time, their food seemed run-of-the-mill fried stuff.
I grew up in New Orleans and didn't have a lot of money when I lived there. So I rarely ate at the fancy places (although Commander's Palace was a special family treat). There are dozens of little corner restaurants and po-boy shops whose names I've long forgotten. Speaking of which, is Buster Holmes place still around? I know he passed away years ago, but did his family keep it going? -
try any of john besh's restaurants. i also like cochon and upperline. in the quarter, try muriel's.
-
Thanks. John Besh has a steak place in the Harrah's where we're staying.
