Wings taste test..\"Ono\" vs \"Grove\"

I hope this works this time! Thanks for everyone's help.

I wanted to do a little taste comparison with some lump. I used "Ono" in one egg and "Grove" in another. Took a couple packages of "Smart Chicken" wings and put some Dizzy Pig Tsunami spin on them. Set up both eggs at 350 degrees, indirect. One egg had Ono lump and the other had Grove lump. Cooked the wings 30 mins., flipped, 30 mins. more and flipped again. Raised the temp to 425 degrees. Dipped the wings in Frank's red hot sauce, butter and parmesan cheese. Cooked another 10 mins. to crisp them up a little.

Both were delicious, not too spicy, and very nice and crispy. :) I definitely liked wings the cooked with the "Ono" lump better. It has a wonderful aroma and taste. In my opinion nothing compares to the flavor created by the kiawe wood they use to make "Ono". Kiawe is a Hawaiian mesquite. Nothing the mesquite we have in the states. The hawaiians solely us kiawe wood for their luau's. I've used it with pork and it's faboulous.

"Grove" has a nice mild smoke flavor also but doesn't compare the flavor of "Ono".

Cooking indirect is makes cooking wings easy. You don't have to flip continuously and no chance of a flare up. Makes cooking large quantities a breeze.

Some petrified wood from the "Petrified Forest" in New Mexico. Geological data for the Forest Bed that it is from shows that it is about 209–214 million years old. The ninerals dissolved and turned into crystaline quartz.

    Anne,

Great looking wings, flowers, trees. But, your Eggs look much too neat and clean.

Question about the petrified wood. Is that back home? Did they let you take it back from the Petrified Forest in NM, or can you buy it there ?

    Anne,

Thanks for that review! I have been debating ordering some Ono, my fiance lived in Hawaii for years and thought it might bring back some food memories. Going to order it tonight. Wings look great. And Gatsby is such a handome guy!

Thanks Gary, sorry about my pictures, I'm really having Photobucket problems tonite.
As for your question....these pictures are from my home in Milw. We purchased the wood and brought it back here. It is illegal to take any of the petrified wood out of the park. They do have shops that sell it outside the park.

  • Anne,
The pictures in your post are great. Thank you for delivering the wings to the office for everyone. All of us loved them and they sure did disappear quickly. You are the sweetest!!! I agree, I like the ones cooked with the Ono lump hands down and I think Grove is a great lump.

I'm sure your fiance would love if you made him a dinner cooked on the egg with some "Ono". Maybe make him some Kahlua pork with it. :)

Thanks Molly! Have you ever been to the Petrified Forest? Can't believe you're still getting snow. Those winter are long in Colorado.

Thanks honey!! I enjoy cooking for the gang!! I've got some surprises lined up for next week!! :)
  • It is a whole lot cheaper to suck up then buy something Steven. I am taking her to a nice brunch Sunday. You don't want to throw everything at one time. The demands get out of hand then. Anyway I gave her the day off today!!
  • Man, I am really hurting for a Waffle House meal. I can't find one here and we couldn't find one in Melbourne either (what the heck time in the a.m. was that anyway?). I guess I am going to have to make a run by you Doug so we go go eat some real food!!!!!!
  • reelgemreelgem Posts: 4,256
I have to laugh when I think of the story of you and Del out driving around Melbourne at 4am and you needing your "Waffle House" fix. You guys shouldn't of even been allowed out of the hotel much less driving around.
Maybe it's a good thing there wasn't one. You may have ended up needing help from Zippy. :woohoo:

Thanks Steve, I killed myself cooking those wings. Not only did cook them, they were also delivered. I really do think I deserve something besides a brunch on Sunday. Maybe some new fancy gadget for my kitchen. :)
