Fire! Fire! Fire!

well, I cleaned out some ash last night after a good 12 hour cool down from lunch. Apparently it was still hot enough to smolder in my ash bucket.

Little le did I know the bottom had rusted thru and melted thru the mat that was underneath.

Guess Agnes will be moving this week while I replace some decking. Guess I'll be pouring that concrete slab sooner than later!!!

Dang- dodged a bullet for sure.  Hopefully many will see this thread and take sufficient steps to ensure they don't experience such an event.  Too many (greater than zero) of these posts happen.
Many thanks for posting this as when dealing with wood/lump and fire, it doesn't take much.
Matter of fact, I was visiting with our local fire fighters earlier today (used to volunteer there (12+ years) but too old now) and they were mentioning a house fire were the apparent cause was a gardener who dropped a cigarette butt into some mulch.  Many hours later, sufficient fuel and heat for combustion.  House was saved but not without lots of smoke and water damage.
    Be careful out there.

BGE on a wooden deck increases the chances for fire related events, exponentially.
You sir, should buy a lottery ticket, while your good fortune is in play.
Good call on the concrete pad. Be safe, protect your family and home.
That could have been a disaster. Very happy it was not.

I always liked the weekender's surprise when his mountain cabin burned. "I took the ashes out of the fireplace, put them in a cardboard box and put it on the deck." He returned a week later to find a pile of ashes where his cabin once stood.
I use an cast iron cook pot for ashes and in the mountains with a wood stove, use a galvanized garbage can with lid for ashes. Both are placed on concrete when ashes are added regardless of when the fire went out.

Glad that was the worst of it! That's why my egg is not on my deck and why I almost never use my shop vac to clean it out. Also, after at least two days, when I think my metal bucket full of ash is truly cold, I dump it in an empty lump bag and place it in my patio fire pit. If it's still there in the morning, then I put it in the trash bin. Not before.

Oh and my "metal bucket" is an old stand mixer bowl. Stainless, no rust. :)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
