Bottom Temperature

We've had several discussions on the forum about how safe/unsafe it is to set the egg directly on a slap of granite or stone in a wooden table. @theyolksonyou reported that the wood under his stone had discolored/charred. Several others have reported a similar experience.
Last weekend, after my large had been cooking for awhile at 350 degrees, I dug out the infrared thermometer and checked the bottom temp. The center of the bottom, this egg is in a nest, measured 540 degrees. That egg has a KAB without the OEM grate installed. It probably shouldn't of surprised me but it did. Can't wait to check the temp after a pizza cook.
If you've measured the temps at that location, how about sharing what you found. And, if you find yourself in a daze staring at the egg someday, grab the infrared and check your egg's temp. Especially if you've got it going for a pizza or a clean burn.

Amazing isn't it? Air gap is your friend. MBGE sits in a table nest, the bottom of the egg was at 350º, the tile surface it was sitting above was at 145º - after about an hour at 500º dome.
Much depends on how many glowing embers have fallen thru the grate and how much ash is in the bottom - I'm a firm believer in the woodstove method of leaving about 1/2" of ash in the bottom to insulate the ceramic from the embers.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad! -
I will tell you that I had a fire get out of control in a large egg. I had the ceramic feet on the egg, It was on a wooden table. The fire got so hot that the wood under the egg caught fire.
When I lifted the egg out of the table there was an 8 inch hole burned completely thru the 5/4 inch boards under the base.
The fire was so hot it caused the base to crack in an area thtat there was a casting flaw.
I estimate the temp was 1500 deg or more.
