Some say by weight but the Youtube video by Franklin seems to show that he uses volume.

I'm bettin' Franklin used weight for the first couple of times - then because they buy the same stuff all the time, they can use volume. I buy whatever is on sale so weight makes it easier....Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
