Egg Under Roof: Question

We just had a screened in patio built and will be moving our LBGE inside. The ceiling is vinyl with a height of 8'9". The Egg is in a nest with the top at about 46". Question to all you indoor Eggers, do I have enough clearance for my Egg heated up to steak searing temperatures, without melting the ceiling? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I have a large in a table sitting under the vinyl eves and other than a little smoke discoloring never a heat problem. I pressure wash the vinyl about once a year and it cleans back to white.
-
Thanks for the response. If you don't mind me asking, what is your clearance.
-
do you have fire insurance? and are your mortgage payments up to date????? lol.... rr
-
Just what I wanted to hear...you think my food my have a plastic taste???
-
I've had flames shoot 2' out of my Egg, and I imagine the heat 3' above that it still quite hot. Any chance you could suspend an aluminum shield or something a few inches from the ceiling, making sure to have an air gap so it doesn't just transmit the temp to the plastic.

I don't have a roof, but would love to have one.
I think your clearance will be fine....
But, do make a way for the smoke to clear. Check out a pic taken at the "Ice Fest" with the Eggs under the veranda roof at Uncle Tom's cabin. With out a vent of some sort the smoke will make its way into the house.... -
Richard,
Just wondering how hot do you run your egg, like maybe cleaning it. Are you safe with flames coming out the dome??? or do you have to keep it say under 6 or 700???
Except for cleaning I usually don't go over 550 or 6 myself.
Cheers,

Good thought...thanks

There may be a lot of truth to that but hope one never needs it. I guess about one of the few things you buy but hope you never use it.

I have an egg in a table and it has 58 inches from the rain cap to the vinyl. I have done some high temp sears and haven't melted the vinyl. I have discolored it some. During a high temp sear I put my hand up high over the dome where all the heat is coming from and found the hot air was not as hot up that high.
If my math is correct I would say you should have 59 inches from the rain cap to the vinyl. One inch more than me.
I would say you should be OK. Keep in mind when grilling burgers it gets very smokey. You will get a lot of smoke from other cooks as well. Hopefully you will be able to get that smoke out. Maybe a fan would help.
Another thing to consider is getting a spider from the ceramicgrillstore.com if that is a large you have and a cast iron grid for the spider. That way you can sear at 400F dome yet on top of the burning coals. Another way of doing with out the spider setup for grilling on to of the coals is filling your egg with lump and grilling at a low dome temp because your grid temp will be very hot. Another way is grilling on the burning coals cave man style...Wish you well. -
The patio spans 40' which is basically all screen and will have three 52" ceiling fans. Hopefully any smoke that gets inside will be pleasurable. I did a search for the "Ice Fest" and did not get a hit. Would like to see the pic...

Ground to eve 88 inches, top of large in table 48 inches. Looks like 40 inches.
-
I have done a few total burn outs over the last 6 years and really don't recall being concerned about burning the vinyl. Now you got me thinking about watching the next time. Steaks 600 all the time no problem.
-
Your math is correct...thanks for the advice of cooking close to the coals. Never thought of that. As I mentioned to Mr. & Mrs Potatohead, I'll have three fans going which should dissipate a lot of the smoke.
-
I should be safe then, my clearance is 59". Thanks for taking the time to get the tape out.
-
Sorry, don't know how to attach a link, but...
Go to {Ice Fest....Take 1 "The Venue"} -
ever consider going to a used restaurant supply house and looking for an old hood?... or perhaps having one made at the local vo-tech?
-
Not a problem Kirk. I am consider it paying it foreward.
Hope it all works out for you. -
check the melting point of vinyl.... when you're cooking take the temp above the egg.... see where you're at and then add in "murphy's law " of fire safety....

Consider getting your step ladder and when grilling at a high temp feel the air at about 50 inches above the egg or dome. I have and it's been a while but, if I remember correctly it's cool. I will admit a big flaming back draft might get gnarly. :woohoo:
-
I cook on a roofed porch. No heat problems, but my attic has a lovely apple/pork smell after a long cook. I just roll mine to whichever side of the porch offers the best wind movement.
-
I just grilled a flank steak (outside) and had the Egg at about 725 dome. Flame was shooting out the vent a good 18" and I was able to hold my hand over the vent at arms reach (I'm 5'10") and had no problem with heat. I don't know if being under roof will change that.
-
Got it from 2fategghead. Awesome, my issue not withstanding. Had to be a great time.
-
Wow!
-
I'm like you. I have done that and was suprised. That heat goes away fast. I will tell you this. I always always always double check and Cindy always asks if I shut the egg down. :ermm:
-
Due to all the great responses I have received, I've been contemplating a reflective shield of aluminum mounted on a spring loaded drafting lamp. Still rattling around in my head, but thinking of either mounting the device on the wall behind the Egg or to the Egg itself. If it works, I'll post some pics.
-
Sounds perfect. The aroma of Egg cooked food is wonderful wherever it lingers.
-
I've established a routine when the food comes off the Egg I take the DFMT off and place it on the grid then shut down the draft door and place the ceramic top on the vent. Like you though, I still double and triple check my fool proof system. Senility is a horrible thing...
-
The only reason I asked is I remember at my other house I had the large going full bore on a covered patio but it was stucco and open on all 3 sides but I had flames shooting out the dome at least 2 ft. if not more.
A real pretty sight at night time. If it was upside down it would have looked like a funny shaped rocket.
Have a great and safe week,
Bordello
