Black residue?

just noticed on my mini, that there is a black residue on the outside of the grill. At first i assumed it was smoke residue from some of the cooks I have been doing, but I just noticed that there is a pool of it running down the back of the grill (it almost looks like a liquid rolled down the side of the ggrill and left residue where it went).
Anyone have any ideas? It is too late now to get any decent photos, I will try to do the tommorrow if it will help.
Thanks
Mark

water vapor is one of the by-products of combustion, when heat or oxygen levels are very low, liquid will actually form inside woodstoves, chimney's etc. I suppose it could happen in your mini if you are getting a very slow start-up, ( damp lump, closing the dome to soon, etc )or shut down, maybe a leaky seal, dome misaligned. maybe someone else will chime in

But this residue is on the outside of the egg...

if that is what it is, its forming on the inside of the dome and running down to the lip between the dome and the base, then finding a way out. look and see if the trail is near the gasket seam.

I have a large, not a mini, and have noticed the same thing.
In my case I know the cause. During lo and slow cooks moisture collects on the Daisy and also occasionally in the bottom slot of the bottom vent. When I open the lid this moisture on the Daisy runs down the back of the Egg.
