Purchased a new GPS this weekend.
Garmin 3760LMT. This unit includes life time map updates and life time traffic.
Problem for me is when you turn on the traffic feature it also prompts the unit to "pop-up" specials on the screen whenever you get close to one of their ad merchants. Real pain in the A** while you are driving to clear them. Coming up to an intersection and a Red Lobster coupon pops up on the screen.
After two days of use it's going back to the store.
Only way to shut it off is to shut down the entire traffic option on the unit. I'm sure other brands will follow or might be doing this already.
Thanks for the vent...

  • Or:

Go into the SETTINGS menu and disable the data/traffic features which would then cease the pop-up ads.

Now thats a crock of sh!t.....as if we don't have to deal with enough advertising already...I'm with you I would return it and also write to Garmin and tell them what you did and why...talk about diistracted driving..
  • Had you posted earlier I could have referred you to the latest Woot.com ad and you could have saved a lot of money by returning yours and buying from Woot.com.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that's what we will just have to get used to. It's all over the web now. Ever go to USATODAY.com? Or CNN where "your video will begin is 30 seconds"? Drives me nuts!! I guess when you're getting free stuff, they have to pay for it somehow. I refuse to look at the ads - though I should, just so I'd know who to boycott!

As for Garmin, that's a different story. You are not getting a "free" online newspaper. You PAID for the thing and shouldn't have to put up with that. I have a Garmin, but it's a few years old and doesn't do that. 'Course, every time I turn it on, it tells me my maps are out of date (about two years out of date :)). They used to give free map updates, or so I'm told. Last I checked, it's gonna cost me $80 for new maps. How often do they change roads anyway? I can live with old maps. Pop-up ads? Not a chance.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

There are units you can buy that you pay a monthly fee for traffic updates. When its free you pay with pop ups. -RP

I understand your point but this unit cost more because it included free map updates and unlimited traffic.

My older Garmin Nuvi 770 died but I ordered a new battery on line for $21.oo free shipping and it included all the tools. It's alive again as of tonight. All is good.
