Put two buttheads on Lily Large yesterday at 4:30, gave her some oak and pecan and assigned the BBQ Guru to monitor her throughout the night with plans for their little Eggventure to come to an end about 10:00 AM in time to be wrapped good and hustled off to the 'Butt Hole' to wind down before being presented to my International Workforce.

Thunder and rain awakend me at 12:30 AM so I looked at the remote monitor and it read 174°. Hummmmm! Already out of plateau and headed to climax, are we? Must be youngsters that can't wait for the full ride.

Looks like I may have to 'middle-of-the-night' them into the Butt Hole if this keeps up. Surely, I will hear "Your meal is almost ready" "Your meal is almost ready" soon after I crawl back in bed.

Looks to be a long night. But at least it rained.

Say goodnight Leroy...

    Morning Leroy:

Nice to know that someday I too will be able to get up at 1:30am to check on some pork butts again! Hopefully you dialed back the guru a little so they would "coast" into their final temp.

As you and Judy have said (along with Pat & Wendy)...each day after the surgery gets better, but it is a slow process at first!

Hope the butts came out the way you wanted them.

    Have a GREAT day!

  • Ain't that the truth...

  • I shut the Guru down to just under 200° and the butts have been crusing at 185° for about three hours. I'll kick it back up a couple of hours before lunch to polish them off and let 'em set in the Butt Hole for a bit.

The Butt Hole is built just for that purpose.

  • Yea Jay, people with considerable patience tend to fare better at surgery than those of us who want and expect it to be over and done with quickly. But that ain't gonna happen with knee replacement surgery.

As for the butts, yes, I dropped the temp down some on the Guru and went back to bed. I must have selected from the 'High Speed Butts" section at Sam's Club. They sure wanted to get done quick.

Hang in there and it will get better.

  • I did two 8 pound Sam's Club butts last week on an overnight cook(large egg). Put them on at 4:30PM at 230 degrees(Guru) and checked them when i got up at 8:00AM and internal was 185. Had some shopping to do, so i kicked the Guru up to 270 degrees and reached my pulling point (195-200 internal) at 9:30AM . Very little waste at all and very moist!
    Can't complain about Sam's meats.
  • Sounds Eggactly like my cook...

Yes, I've never had a bad butt from Sam's Club.

Thanks for the update, Leroy. My boys had just been asking about the goings on in the coop. So we looked over some pictures. Then last night, while signing up a nice kitchen remodel project, my customer says he read about me on the CNN writeup. Darn Google. He mentioned the coop as well. :P

Ain't so small'a place, that Spring Texas, you call home.
  • See what happens when you become a celebrity. For us it was just an, "Aww Shucks!" day.

Apparently, the folks at CNN liked the responses they had about the article. They asked me to come up with some other Egghead related stories. I haven't had much time to think on it but it would be nice to let the world know that Egg'n is a lot more than men, beer and backyard grills. Perhaps something about the growing number of women Eggers, or that families get totally involved in planning and cooking meals on the Egg. I think we could get some really good participation from our little 'cult.'

I'm still think'n on it. If you've got ideas, please share them with me. All it takes is a good spark to light some more fire.
