I have not seen it on Naked Whiz. I was wanting to know what your thoughts were.

I have used it in a pinch, it seems to be a lot more porous than some of the others I have tried, doesn't seem to burn as long. Like I said, I use it in a pinch, have 2 Krogers within 3 miles of my house, so it is quick and easy to get. Overall, it's not bad,but certainly not my favorite.

It is great as far as I'm concerned. I bought a few bags not long ago after it went on sale and I received coupons in the mail.
It is believed to be North American Royal Oak, as is BGE lump.

It's my go-to lump, supposed to be made by royal oak.
I use it pretty regularly, lights well, no popping, reasonably priced and available year round here.

Yes, Kroger and Publix brands are Royal Oak. I called Royal Oak (678 461 3200) last year and inquired where I could buy their lump and those were two of the stores they listed as well as Wally World. They were very nice.

Agreed w/ the others. When I am in Cincinnati it is what I use. In Florida I use Publix brand. Both the same, they burn well and are very consistant :cheer:
  • Great info, Blair!
I buy my lump at WW, but it is in a RO bag. Glad to know the Kroger lump is made by RO. Might help when WW is out or Kroger ( our closest grocery store) has a sale on it. Right now I have about 90# of RO in my storage room, so I'm ready for anything!
  • Have used it several times, when my Ozark Oak or RO runs low. Good stuff.

Hey Clark, I am currently using a 20# bag of Frontier lump that I got at an Ace Hardware, 20# for $11.99. It spent all summer under my trailer wrapped up in just a big trash bag. When I got it out from under the trailer the paper bag the lump came in was damp but the lump felt dry. So far it has burned much like Royal Oak. It is good enough so I plan on testing it further. The Frontier site has a link from THIS PAGE for a $5.00 rebate. Not a bad deal for pretty good lump. :cheer:

It is private label from Royal Oak which also private labels the lump for BGE.

    Great lump.

I just got 5 bags of Kroger lump. It was on sale. The stock person ordered it for me as they were out at the time. Good to know I can order and it comes in the next week. Stock clerk said I can order any time, it's not a seasonal item. Some places don't keep lump on hand all the time, because apparently some people in Virginia only cook out in the Summer. That's odd. Kroger lump is good stuff. Much cheaper than BGE.

Folks can get Kroger brand (Royal Oak) lump from any Kroger or their company owned stores. Out here Smith Food King is Kroger owned.

  • Kent, have you seen the Kroger lump at your store in the winter? I stocked up this year with RO (bought 36 bags, I honestly dont know how I will get through it using the mini mostly). Last winter I found out WM didnt stock RO all year, and got stuck with cowboy and the mesquite you and I have around here.

I just wondered if you can still find it, without having to ask that it be ordered in. I wonder if anyone has asked WM if they will order in some RO for them?

No RO in my neck of the woods at WallyMart. Hard to find someone to ask. That part of the store is a ghost town.

    Walmart won't order.

Smiths said they won't stock but will order. I gave it a try last winter and 3 bags were here in 4 days. Not sure if I was lucky with their ordering cycle or if that is the usual turnaround. They said no problem ordering it anytime of the year.

If you are mainly using the mini you shouldn't go through 36 bags before summer. Now, with all your other cookers that's a different story. :)
