Wok/Spider Question(s)

We finally splurged and bought a spider and a wok (Ceramic Grill Store). Now, I have a couple questions for those that have these items...
1. I believe we need to season our wok, and I found the process detailed on the forum, but what I really wondered... Will using the wok on a regular basis end up seasoning the wok, or just making a mess? So far, it's just making a mess, so I figure we need to find/make time to do the seasoning process, but what do ya'll think?
2. Do you remove the upper fire box and just leave the fire ring when you use the spider and/or the wok? I assume to sear steaks and such, you either fill the heck out of the firebox or remove the ring??? Same for wokking?
Thanks!

I use the spider on my large in the high position. Works very well for me. After cooking I take and wash with water and a brush, both front and back, NEVER soap.. wipe with light coat of peanut oil on both sides and return to storage.

def find the time to season it. did one just by using and it took awhile.. the next one I seasoned and huge diff between them. even now. and I leave my spider in all the time.... I do not fair to well when I take it out... :pinch: I stepped on it at the mini fest in FL.... I am ALWAYS barefoot...... still have the blister on the bottom of my big toe :(

Thanks for the info! We'll try to srub it clean and start fresh this weekend. We've used it everynight since we had the swordfish.

MainEgg, Do you have your spider on top of the ring, and then leave it there??? Sorry to hear about your foot/toe. Youch! -
Hey Julie, yes I just leave it there on the fire ring. I have the med woo on it also sitting on top of that so never in the way for me.. if I need closer I just lift the woo out and drop on my wok. but most of the time I ma hot enough just sitting on the cross bars of the woo. I'm a Julie too

Hey, Julie! I think we met at the Fl Fest?
I'm concerned about a lack of air flow with our wok, that's why I keep asking about the placement of the spider. We get a huge flashback if we're not careful when we remove the wok, so I'm guessing that's an air flow issue? The bottom vent is wide open to get the heat up, and the spider's legs are down for higher heat. Obviously, we just tip it slowly to get air flow and then lift to avoid the flashback; but I thought we might be overlooking an easy fix (such as placement of spider), so thought I'd ask the experts here.
Hoping to get a cast iron grate to fit on the spider and get a good sear on a steak soon!
