Every 30 seconds, a car is stolen in our country, and many of them are late models, (not 1955, Chevy Impalas)! Thieves target newer vehicles, often those equipped with GPS units. Once the theft has taken place, they simply program in "home" (which most have their units programmed to), and once there, they simply use your garage door opener (an accessory of modern-day, autos) to gain access to your abode. Unfortunatey, all of this could happen before you even realise that your vehicle has been stolen! The simple cure is, don't program your home in your GPS unless you're on a long voyage! A word to the wise...

    Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given another Mini to add to the herd.

    I'll try to remember that the next time I'm visiting my son in NYC! I will NEVER figure out how to get out of that madhouse!!! :)

    All vehicles are in my name....GPS has wife's name listed. On the other hand I'd have to go check but I'm pretty sure the vehicle registration in the glove box has my address on it so its kinda of a moot point isn't it. B)

    I have a police station labeled as "home". Figure if I find out my car is stolen in a timely manner, I can place a call to the police and suggest they stand outside and wait.

    I had typed a response to the same effect and lost it. The bad guys likely have GPS on their cell phones anyway.

    My thought exactly, I have my name and address on so many other things in my car it's a moot point. I know where I live but I guess if you wanted you could program it to the nearest off ramp, at least that wouldn't pin point you. I drive a '93 Honda Civic 2 door w/150,000 on it that doesn't have a GPAnything in it so I don't worry much. If I put a GPS in it they would probably steal it for the GPS! :laugh:

    Yes police station would be good thing to program as home, but how about the county morgue, or a cemetary, but then if I leave the keys in the car, and the crook figures out I did it so he could take it, then he'll figure it isnt worth keeping, he'll kow where to bring it back to.

    My car was broken into in my driveway.. They break a back window and crawl in, and crawl out. I have since do not leave my door opener in the car, and they could get in the garage easily, and we now deadbolt the house to garage door.
    What a waste for some stupid bad guys. They hit 10 cars on my street that night.

    All they wanted was GPS and iPods. sell them quick for cash.

    most guys who steal cars don't also break into houses.

    why would someone who is stealing a honda for parts take the same car straight back to the house where it is from, and then break in to the house?

    one kind of thief steals cars. the other breaks into houses.

    Part of the tale is that the crooks break into the cars and steal the GPS (not a built in model) and garage door opener and then leave the car and go to the home. But still...

    Exactly.but most navi allow u to password protect the home address.

    When I was growing up there was a nice lady from Germany down the block with a beautiful German Shepherd trained as a Shutzhund. All the training words where in German except the attack word, that was "nice doggy". All the kids on the block new the story and we all loved that dog. I guessing that old gals :evil: GPS has home as the Police station. :evil:

    I use the home feature to give me a good idea what time I will arrive home from road trips. Works pretty good, coincidentally I live exactly one mile down a country road from the police station so it's pretty easy to add about 60-90 seconds on to my ETA since "home" happens to be the 1st parking spot next to the front door of the station :laugh:

    My car's GPS has a password to make it work, but if it didn't I'd program "home" to be 2 blocks away. You only need the home directions if you are somewhere unfamiliar to you, and by the time you get 2 blocks from home, I hope you could find your way for the remainder of the trip.
