New Gasket Test

Cool day today so I lit the oven to bake beans. I thought I could put the chicken wings in the oven too, but instead lit the egg for the first time since attaching a new gasket. This was my first DIY project for the egg. I got a woven oven gasket at an appliance service center. Cleaned the lower rim with paint stripper, a blade, then polish remover. Waited and applied ultra copper and attached the new gasket. I knew I had to wait 24 hrs to cure so I closed it with wax paper between the rims. While lighting it I had the worries that it would glue shut, or burn up, or leak. You know, whatever could go wrong would go wrong. But instead I was wrong. It seemed to seal perfectly. No smoke coming out of the egg, or from where I seamed the ends together. That was a concern. The biggest difference is how soft it closes now with that nice cushion. There is no top gasket so it's not too thick. That one burnt up and fell off too. Wings were perfect direct 350' for about a half hour, turning a few times. Ahh, that feels so good when something works out well. I've had nothing but trouble with the original felt and later nomex gaskets. I took the plunge and won. So far. But no complaints for today. I'll do a few more low cooks before I go nuclear with pizza.

Good for you Patty. You sure have had some gasket problems. Glad this went well. I think a stove gasket would last a long time if you don't go to nuke temps.

Nope, no power tools. Nothing bigger than a blender.
I didn't like using the stripper solvent, but I did. Gloves and all.

Patty, so glad it worked out well! If you get a chance, please post some pics of your new gasket. Would love to see the finished product. Who knows, my Rutland may not last forever!! :)
