these are what I use to scoop ash out of the egg and sift the lump at the bottom of the bag. the larger one sits perfect in the top of a bucket and so everything sifts right through.

and the best part Hoss is that the basket keeps the mini full with what is left in there of small stuff. those are always quick cooks anyways so perfect

I don't get it. What is the purpose of these things?
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

LOL if I have to clean the lump out of the egg to transport then the small one scoops it out and leaves just ash in the bottom. I scoop the saved lump in the "spoon" right into anther egg or bag. the large basket lets me dump the bottom of a bag of lump out and not have all the dust and very fine stuff that is there end up in the egg and can choke out the fire. or give you a "false" full look in the egg. that can cause the fire to go out. all the ash from our eggs go on our blueberries so when the bucket is full and a few days of setting to be sure is cool it gets dumped on them

COOL!I need more Eggs!!! :(

You need more eggs!!! :woohoo:

Hmm. Seems like way more trouble than I am willing to put up with. I dump lump from the bag into the egg. Then I light it. Next cook, I stir what's left from the last one with the ash tool and light IT. If I need more, I dump more in. If I decide to use the other egg, I do the same thing there. The only screen I use for my lump is the grate at the bottom of the firebox!!

Carolina-Q,
Just to give you my reason why I am soon going to be building a lump sifter...
I buy my Mesquite lump in 40 lb bags (12 bucks!)
but there is always a lot of fine's at the bottom of the bag mixed in with usable stuff.
I tried using the fines, but they clog up the holes causing a low temp fire.
I know I could get several cooks out of the fines I would normally dump out in the garden.
That's just my .02... -
Interesting, what advantage does the ash give to the blueberries? I have three in pots. I just throw it out but would rather use it if possible.Dave San Jose, CA The Duke of Loney
