So, I woke up this morning prepared to go out and buy my new Big Steel Keg. Yes, you read that right, I was going to buy the BSK.

I called the factory to find out who their distributors were and started calling them. Nobody even knew what I was talking about, let alone having them in stock.

So, I looked back at the BGE and decided that maybe I could make it fit into my budget. A couple of hours later I was unboxing and assembling my brand new medium Egg, with nest, plate setter, bag of BGE charcoal and a complimentary bag of Weekend Warrior charcoal.

A couple of Kobe rib eyes from my local Korean store later and I am extremely happy with my decision.

Although, I do think I need to pick up one of the cast iron grills.

Nice choice. I think you made a very wise decision. With a lifetime warranty, it's very hard to beat a ceramic grill that will stay with you for life. I have a Medium as well as a Large. My medium is a steak cooking machine. I love my cast iron grid. Those things can get extremely hot and put a good sear on a steak. Plus it gives you the cool grill marks if your into that kind of thing. Welcome aboard and don't forget about the search block at the top of the page. If you need answers on any cooks, they probably have been ask many times. There's a wealth of information on here.

Welcome!! The hubby had the CI grid on his 'must have' list (you know...the list you don't tell the wife about! ) So it arrived...I think we used it twice, and now it just hangs there. You don't need it. Trust me. Nothing at ALL wrong with the grids that come with the Egg. B) Experiment, and save the money for something that makes a REAL difference, like plate setter or pizza stone. :)
Where are you located? We could sell you the Lg CI at a discount!
  • No, buy the Cast Iron grid. Its great. Good sear marks, and the reverse side has flat bars that are close together eliminating the need for a grill pan for small food items, as well as making it easier to get your spatula under fish and burgers.

Welcome! I have had my EGG for four months and love it. I have not used my oven since getting my EGG and I have started baking bread! It is one of the most incredible devices.

As I was told when I joined this forum "We love pictures" and it is true if you have a question toss it out someone here has done it before.

  • I agree with LC, I get good grill marks with my factory issued grid. I would buy a plate setter first, and check out the grid marks on your cooks. Then if appearance is that important to you then buy one .

welcome to the club. there is a problem with the BGE though.

  • Welcome to the kamado world, you will love your egg. I actually got a bubba keg to go with my eggs for 299 last week. It cooks exactly like my large egg, but I might prefer the egg if I could only choose one. Regarding the cast iron, I have it on my small egg and my BK. They put some serious grill marks on when doing a high heat sear. Sometimes I think searing at 700 or so using CI can be too much cause I can only sear about 30 seconds a side. They do give some good marks on your steak though.
