I'm trying to figure out a simple solution to using a pc fan with a pid to stoke my fire on low and slow smokes. PID is selected.. Thermocoupler is selected.. fan has been procured... Now i just need to figure out a mounting solution as well as a damper... Anyone with enginutiy feel free to help me brainstorm. my idea as of now is to basically use sheetmetal to fabricate a box that tapers down to the size of the opening at the lower vent... attach the fan to that and whola... Damper is were i'm stumped. I don't think i can use any of the controllers (bbq guru, stoker, etc) adapters because they all use squirlcage fans and i have a pc fan. Thanks for any help fellas.

A short time ago there was a couple of threads about the DYI powered vent controllers. There were some very interesting posts. In those posts there was link to squirrel cage fans for about $10 which included shipping.

Bladed fans won't create air pressure and that's why swamp coolers, furnaces, air conditioners all use squirrel cage type fans. You are going to want to have the air travel up through the fire box and up through the lump.

    Some ideas are this and

and or maybe using a hose from a shop type vacuum.

A damper could something like what stoker uses, a gravity feed door or even a cut in the tubing and some type of a slider to restrict the air flow as well as the free air passing through the ban when not running.

I didn't bookmark the posts. Use the forum search and search for blower or fan or PID or Stoker or Guru and one of those hits in the subject should get you to those posts.

Limit the search to 30 days.
