I was reading up on one of the bbq forums and came up with this.
http://tvwbb.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9270072103/m/909108292
I'm fairly handy but cannot solder. I have a buddy who works with electronics and can solder but he's asking me for a temperature and type of solder needed. Anyone have any input. I figure i'd give this a shot for 50 bux.
Thanks for any help

Any standard 60/40 flux-core electronics solder will do. I have an Arduino so lemme know how far you get with this project.

usudno,
I read through some of the stuff and don't see that the unit has any built in stuff. The guy on the Weber forum said he used another board for his PID loop but isn't clear whether he wrote the code for it. Not meaning any disrespect here but analog software can be a bear if you aren't fully familiar with it especially if you have to build it from scratch. The usnit appears to be a hobbyist's toy mimicking a PLC. With PLC software you get certain device framework built in and you calibrate, set the axes and you are done. Fun to play with maybe and let us know your results. 60/40 resin core solder.

That's pretty hard core. I'm a EE, and I don't have the patience to put something like that together. For the extra $45, I'd go with one of the Auber units that were posted here a few days ago.

If you don't have your mind set on the original setup in your post, you may want to consider this SIMPLER controller and fan setup. I don't think this one will cause you near the headache, but that is just my opinion. There are even notes on building it without any solder connections. Good luck whatever you decide!!

Hey Cheyco
I happen to be at loose ends in Cowtown tonight, would you like to get together for a brew?

thanks for the link. That controler looks much simpler and more user friendly. Only issue is the thermcoupling. I'd rather an alligator clip on the end just to clip it on my dome thermometer. That unit is desinged to be integrated into a custom smoker.
