Hatch Chili Apple Pie

I was looking through an old issue of New Mexico Magazine yesterday, when I came across a recipe that got my attention. It is a no crust apple pie made with tart apples(I used Granny Smith), and roasted Hatch Chilies. I took it a step further and lined the bottom of the pie pan with uncooked flour tortillas. I've found another recipe that was a 2 crust pie, but this was simple so I thought I'd try it. Got my Small really clean, and used a pie tin of crushed granite on my GrateMates spider set-up to avoid any meat dripping aromas that might come from my plate setter. I actually Mapp-torched the top to crust it up a bit right before removing. Interesting flavors. Preceeded it with some thick cut chops and fried okra. It was really tasty, but I was up all night. :(
Mike
1 1/2 qt. sliced tart apples
1/2 cup roasted Hatch (Anameim) Chilies
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tbs. lemon or apple juice
3/4 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup butter
chopped pecans or walnuts
Mix together apples, chilies, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice and mound in buttered pie pan. Crumble butter, brown sugar and flour and press into apple mixture until well distributed and firm. Top with nuts and press lightly. Cook at 350 for 1 hour or until done.

D@$& making me hungry. Reminds me of the early years in the '50's when I lived in Albuquerque and dad would bring home a gunny sack or 2 of right from the fields chilies. Looks like a very sharp cheddar cheese and glass of milk would go great.
Wonder how LONEY used for chili rellanos would be??? -
That looks very good. When you say interesting flavors , what do you mean? Good, bad, can't say?Dave San Jose, CA The Duke of Loney

Hey Barry:
Man, they smelled incredible while they were roasting!

I'm with you on the cheese. All I had was some Provalone to put on this.

Mike looks so good. Linda & I went to CM in Austin and picked up some of the med Hatch Burgers (pre-formed) to cook Sunday lunch. The very best hamburger I have ever had..... Love CM at hatch time....Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given another Mini to add to the herd.

Thanks, Zip. I just use Picasa as an editing tool before forwarding pics to Photobucket. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picasa
I'm probably doing at Picasa something similar to what I could do in Photobucket, but it's really simple for me to use and I'm accustomed to it.

It was likely just the cook that made it so good.

LR, I'm intrigued by that recipe. Sweet / Hot combo sounds good. I believe this is the second Hatch chili posting I've seen recently. The harvest must be starting.

In full swing. The sweet/hot flavor combination is really nice.

That is a thing of beauty, and the okra looks to be spot on....nicely done.

Thanks Mike, great looking pie

That pie looks simply divine....gives me an idea to incorporate some jalapenos in a peach dump cake and serve with Blue Bell! And the okra - oh my! It all looks very, very good.
