Cold Climate BGE Cooking

I am sure you will get several responses to your concern. However; no worries, the Egg is weather-proof from top to bottom. One of the good things about your Egg, it doesn't care what the temperature is outside. Weather it's 7 or 107, your Egg will be just fine.

I have been known to sweep away the snow as it falls on the back deck to leave me a 'path' out to Humpty. Notice I said sweep as the snow fall here in Portland, Oregon is not all that bad.

no problem! It was -14° when I took this picture - that was the actual temp not the wind chill!


I about froze my tush off but the egg didn't!

Paul: Just buy an extra warm parka and a good hat. You're the only one that's going to mind the cold temps! :laugh: Seriously though, we have Eggheads in Canada, Alaska, etc...no concern necessary.

So, when I'm cold, I'm really NOT cold. Man, I'm glad to hear that!! Will try really hard to remember it when I'm babysittin' a butt in January!

if it has been raining a lot and the egg has been unused for a while, it'll sweat like ernest borgnine (second reference on the forum tonight)

water IN the ceramic.

it gets in there.
the ceramic can handle it though. it's a pretty sophisticated refactory mix that can take a lot of thermal stress.

if i lit my small egg after a long period of little use, it will be waterlogged, and the water boils out of the ceramic, out between the cracks in the crazed glaze. it will also hiss and boil out from the thermoeter hole, which is drilled after glazing/firing, and is raw ceramic.

lots of water in the egg at times. regular use keeps it dry mostly. but even then, if wet, there's no issue with the water popping off a section of the ceramic (unless there's a void)

You should be fine. I live in Atlanta where we routinely cook on the egg when its freezing like 50 degrees.

Here's a pic of my small egg sweating like crazy It sat unused for a while when I was building my new deck It all burned/oozed out and is as good as new now.

Doug, you have aliens in your part of Georgia. I've seen what they did to your chiminea also :ohmy: :laugh:

I live north of you in Canada and I egg all winter long without any problem at all.
