FYI, I just tried to order some Cotronics gasket material in the 5/8" width, and was told it would be a custom order, and would require the purchase of 2000 feet or so. Needless to say, I passed. Oh well.....

  • ou mightknow this...

has the Cotronics gasket ever been "approved for use around food"?

when someone mentions the rutland, invariably there're a couple posts warning against it and suggesting the cotronics as an alternative. just wondering if the use around food is any safer.
  • Due possible legal issues I doubt Cotronics will ever recommend the use of their gasket material around food.

I personally have used their gasket material for a number of years and have no qualms about it. You have to decide for yourself.

I have also found the 1" width to work great on my large and small. Some overhang on the inside of the small but I never notice or worry about it.

  • Please see my webpage on the topic: Cotronics Gasket Safety

My conclusion is that Rutland and Cotronics are perfectly safe, but of course, each person should read the available information and make their own decision.

Then again...you sit in the driveway and seperate charcoal...just so you can chase it around with that big, high powered camera thingy!!

I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!!

.....but, but, but. I heard the Rutland can cause birth defects and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease and possibly even bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Yes, this is a joke playing on the hyperbole that often ensues in these threads. It has not been shown that any babies were harmed or that any cows became mad from cooking near rutland or cotronics gaskets.
  • i understand the whole "decide for yourself" thing. i am just relating that there are some pretty "authoritative" posts on here which imply utter safety of the cotronics while warning against the rutland.

both are woven fibers of inert material. the warnings against the rutland are with regard to fibers coming off and getting into your food. it's a mechanical (not chemical) issue.

...which always leads me to ask why people think the cotronics would for some reason be magically "safer".

i have a rutland, by the way. i'm not saying either is 'safe' or' dangerous', just wondering why some cotronics advocates can say it is safe while the rutland isn't. unless it has been stated that it is safe. for example, i think it's used on another brand of cooker, isn't it? so.... does that mean it has been approved officially?
  • Dude. I'm will to take the risk for you guys. You should see what happens when I blow my nose after I finish sorting a bag. The city of Raleigh won't take my used kleenex any more, lol....

That is enough for about 382 large eggs for one gasket each. I think we can get a group order. If it needs top and bottom we only need 191 orders. Put me down for 2.

I have the 1 inch wide on my XL. some one on here bought the $100 minimum and I bought 15 feet from him, did the top and bottom, and cut the remaining in half lengthwise and put on the chimney top.
permatex 650 degree to stick it on.. do not get the version with the sticky tape, it will not last.
