I am going to buy either the XL or L grill but can’t decide. I will mainly be cooking for my family of 4. But several times a year I have the extended family over and I cook for about 20 or 30. My biggest concern though is the brisket. I like to smoke a whole brisket. I have read that it can be done my folding it over a rib rack for cooking on the L. Does that work very well?
Is there any difference in the L and XL for cooking just for 4? The sales man told me the L was more efficient, but he may have misread my contemplations as a concern over the price.

Your opinions and comments would be appreciated.

well, everyone that has a large will tell you that is all you need especially when you buy the accesories, The people (like me) that have an XL say you dont need so many accessories such as extra racks, and other stuff. At the end of the day it will probably work out the same. last night I hade 4 potatos, 6 ears of corn, a spatchcocked chicken, and a cast iron skillet on my xl without any other stuff, other than the absolute neccessity plate setter.

and as you can see. lots of room left over. Probably should have gotten a Large, but there is no way my wife will let me have two of these.

We are a family of 4; 2 Adults + 2 Teenagers and a Large is doing the job just fine.

  • Have you considered a large and small for when you have a crowed? About the same price as the xl, but more flexibility.

I think that two is better than one. I have a large and a small. The small is big enough to cook for a family of four. The problem with having only one egg is when you want to cook a low and slow and pizzas, steaks, or chicken. With two eggs you could cook a larger variety at different temps.

A Large is plenty big enough for a family of four, and I've cooked for as many as 70 on it using the Adjustable Rig. Granted, the menu gets pretty limited at that number, but it's possible. I've done whole weeks of cooking a wide range of dishes (ribs, pulled pork, kebabs, chicken, etc.) for 25 or so, too, using the AR.

Ross...Unless I am seeing the pic wrong (which is likely as I am totally blind  )...Is your table too close to the Egg? Looks like the wood on the table is starting to scorch?? As in ctredwells recent post, that can go South in a hurry!! Another paver or two underneath may be in order to give more space between the table and the ceramics? Not trying to be nosey, but if I am seeing what I think I am, there is more distance needed between the egg and the cut out. Just my two cents...and concern for one of our own. :)

thisbutts4u: We are large owners...(actually 3  ) I can't speak for the XL, but I can certainly speak for the large. Since you express concern about brisket, here is an 18 pound packer on the large. It was started with a foiled fire brick underneath, but the brick was removed after a couple hours since a brisket shrink ratio is huge...
Sorry...could not locate the exact pic I wanted...please check out this read though....

There are other more thorough and better sites out there, but this is a start. The main brisket you see on this site is an 18 lb packer,..large egg.
Whichever you decide you will be happy with it, just don't underestimate the capacity of the Egg. I can't imagine having anything larger than a large. Just my two cents...and Welcome!! :)
