Cast Iron Grid

Just received my Big Green Egg and went out today and purchased the cast iron grid. There were only "kids" working in the store and were unable to answer this question. Should the grid be seasoned like cast iron cookware before use?

No. At the temps you will be using there ain't no seasoning going to last.

Cook some really greasy things on it the first few times you use it. After you take the food off, open up the vents and let the fire burn off any residue. Do this a couple times within the first week you have it. The only thing that touches my CI grid is a stiff wire brush.

Any seasoning will burn off. One of my "tools" that I keep with the Egg is a rolled up old kitchen towel, tied up like a roast with twine. After a cook, I'll use this to wipe down the grid with some vegetable oil, just to help prevent any rust from forming before the next cook.

FYI Pre-seasoned CI is black. Unseasoned CI is gray.
As the others said, it dosen't matter much because it will burn off quickly anyway. I'm in Florida and my CI lives outside, mostly in the EGG, but I do get some rust on occasion. I use a wire brush and spray it with a little cooking spray, no big deal

That's a very good idea. I'm going to try this.

Is the main advantage of the cast iron grill the sear marks it provides?

Pretty much. Unless your lucky enough to have yours break in half after dropping it off the deck. Now you can lift half off to add wood.
