What is this 'Black Pearl' cooker ???
Pepper Monkey BBQ
Posts: 652
I was asked the difference between the 'black pearl' cooker and the big green egg today .... and because it was new to me, I didn't really have the answer. Any ideas what's up with this ... seems to be primarily sold through Costco.

Its costco's attempt to capitalize on the popularity of ceramic grills, so its the same basic principle. . Some are good, others are terrible, cheap knockoffs. I haven't seen one, but Costco is known for good customer service and it has a lifetime warranty which I have heard was backed by Costco because they commissioned the product. I'm not going to badmouth it, but I'll stick with my egg. Where else am I gonna hang out on a Sunday night???

It's a Grilldome.I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!!

It appears to cost just about the same as an EGG and finding out who makes it is difficult. It only makes you wonder how easy it will be to find who provides service for it. Probably not a bad cooker but for the same money you can get a BGE which we all know is a great cooker with a strong company standing behind it.

Copetition is always good.
I have to enjoy the subtle reverse they pulled talking about the ceramic crazing being something that "plagues" ceramic cookers. And for suggesting that a coat of paint is a superior finish in that regard. Last time i was in the grill dome forum there were customers on their asking about refinishing their cooker.
But innovation is a good thing.
I can't see many people going into to costco to drop a grand on a cooker though. -
Shoot, if I could get OUT of Costco without dropping a grand it would be a different story. They don't even ask for my ID anymore...that's scary. I would think this would be more impulse buyer though unless someone was very educated on what the gadget WAS. But if they are that educated they would know how important the support of a good company turns out to be.

Re: support, Costco only can provide good service on that cooker if you want to return it. I assume that one buys something because one wishes to keep it.The Naked Whiz

Maybe they will start selling the Organic Lump Charcoal,
-
yes, we know you have some serious cash  , but i'm assuming joe flip-flops who goes to costco for a 24-pack of old spice deodorant isn't going to suddenly drop a K on a Kamado

I was in an Ace Hardware Saturday, one of the "general store" type that has been there for 50 years, selling overalls, hunting boots, mouse traps, lawn mowers, & everything in between. As I was standing in the grill section, contemplating a round wire basket with removable handle sort of thing, 2 guys walk up to the Bubba Keg that was about 3ft to my left. "WOW, what a grill" says one. "Like an Egg on Steroids" says the other. If my GF hadn't been with me I might have not handled it so well, but I bit my tongue and let it go.

I only buy free-range organic lump.

Costco always sells good strong products, BUT, I would have to consider the fact that for the money you spend on that, they have yet to establish a track record and have readily available accessories. I'll stick with my eggs.

I have to agree with what others have said. One of the big factors in my choice to buy an egg was the service and support of a local dealer and the company as a whole. The eggcessories where also a great selling point as I, like everyone else here, has gotten past flipping a burger and a dog. Pizzas and woks here I come!
