BBQ Guru probe problem
Q-Ball
Posts: 16
Seems as though my food probe has died. I get nothing but the dreaded triple dashes. I've only used it like 10 times. I've handled it carefully, made sure there are no kinks in the wire every time. Any ideas as to why the probe up and died? Any suggestions on how to keep them alive and well?
I'm hooked. I can't imagine life without my BBQ Guru.

Have you plugged the probe into the other port to see if it reads? Swap them and put the meat probe in the pit plug and vice versa. See if one or either of them reads correctly. This will check to see if it is the probe or the port on the controller.
Are you sure the plug and receptacle are both clean and free of debris? -
Yes, I tried the other port and checked out the connection. Still dead.
-
Have you submerged them in water? I have never had a problem with mine and I never dunk them in water. Tim
-
Like the whole thing, connector and all? The probe part most likely has been submerged.

Pulled my brand new DigiQ DX out of the box this morning for a cook and lo and behold the pit probe was not functioning :( (ominous three dashes). Switched ports, etc., etc., same conclusion.
LUCKILY, they had made a shipping error and sent me two shipments a day apart (already made arrangements to send one back). So, I switched out the pit probes and voila! Works like a champ.
Wonder if there's a bad batch of probes lurking about???? -
If the entire probe including the connection with the cable has been submerged, water can get into the probe at the connection. That may be your problem. The Naked Whiz

If that's the case, once it's wet, it's gone?
If that did happen I'd love to blame it on my wife or kids but it was probably the tequila and beer.... -
I asked you for advise on how to clean mine. You convinced me I needed a new one, and I bought one on the spot. I can't afford to hang out with you.
-
I never submerge more than the tip of any of my probes. In this pic I sometimes soak the probe in soapy water and I never let water get in the end if the probe where the cable goes in. You may try to dry it out some how.

You could blame it on the tequila and beer but I never seen them pay up.

Before you do something drastic I would call BBQ Guru. Tim
-
I have the old style competitor model and sometimes the connection into the unit works out and I get weird readings
-
Like the wife and kids would? One hint that I even suspect them would cost me twice as much in money and S&A.
-
Maybe give Guru a call and tell them your problem. They may send you a replacement. Then you need to be careful. My CyberQ II stuff for one egg cost a pretty penny. Tim
Some of the Guru folks are a member of this forum maybe Hatch will chime in.

Maybe if you nuked it briefly. I dunno -
I had the same problem with my dome probe. The probe broke during my first cook. But no dashed was displayed, the temp droped down - although in reality it was constand. The blower starts, and the pit temp rose higher and higer...
Luckily I realized what´s up here, and pluged the meat probe instead of the pit probe, and finished the brisket w/o meat probe.
A small e-mail to Sarah (BBQ Guru), and I got a new pit probe. Since than, everything has worked great. -
Hmmmm...my pit probe died a very early death, too. Do I sense a trend here?
-
Thought just crossed my mind....What temps are you guys exposing your probes to? Just curious.
-
Usually 225. However on nights I want to try to play "Mess with the Guru" and set a temp of like 238 or 242 just to see if it can do the oddball temp. It certainly can. All night long. Maybe that's what happened to my probe---the Guru got even.
