Smoking with hawthorn
Old Salt
Posts: 28
Neighbors Hawthorn tree was damaged by a wind storm. I cut out the damaged area and was wondering if anyone ever used hawthorn wood for smoking. The wood is quite hard and dense. Researched and found that the leaves and berries can be used for medicinal purposes(heart problems). Had found a site that listed the smoking properties of pretty much all the hardwoods a while ago, but didn't bookmark it. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe this will help:

It doesn't really say much about the smoking qualities. Might just have to burn a piece and smell the smoke.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
I know that hawthorn is a good firewood. A nearby state park planted a lot of it for use as firewood in the rental cabins. Seems like a good candidate for smoke.
I looked at the article SmokeyPitt linked to, and can confirm that the lighter "hardwoods," such as yellow poplar and boxwood are poor choices. They release a lot of heavy smoke quickly, and then are pretty much gone.
