Striper Fishing, and some Fresh Bass for Dinner

Another superstition I learned...never take bananas on a fishing boat.
We loaded up for a trip down in Miami a couple years ago with about 400 beers, some sub sandwiches and a bunch of bananas. The captain wouldn't let us bring them on board the boat - said they were bad luck. We still didn't catch but 1 or 2 fish all day that day, so maybe there's something to it. Of course, it was a charter so maybe the captain was just messing with us -- ya never know. -
I dunno. They are stocked here, but as far as I know they are self propagating once they get established.
-
We've caught them on Lake Murray in South Carolina near 40#. I'm pretty sure they get up to 50-60 pounds in freshwater impoundments and rivers.
When they were dropping the water level there a few years back for dam repairs we could go out and bring 50-60 fish to the boat in an afternoon. -
I hear ya Adam. There's nothing I'd like more right now that to get together for a long weekend with 2 or 3 good friends and do nothing but fish and drink beer all day, then cook on eggs and drink beer all night.
-
i'd heard that. in fact, i had a nectarine in my cooler and i actually considered hiding when i ate it...
-
they stock them, they also breed them with white bass, called wipersfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

i hear that gets old   :laugh:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Great pics! Food and the scenery! I fresh water stripe fish some here as well. It's been several years since I've gone though. Never caught any that big. We always thought we were in heaven when we started catching 4 and 5 pounders.
-
Article in the Arizona Republic this morning had a picture of the new state record for striper...39 lbs! Caught in Lake Pleasant just north of Phoenix.
-
4 and 5 pounds are good largemouth/smallmouth up here
-

Nice trip and nice cook
Surprised you can filet on the boat
A buddy of mine caught a few wahoo on a blue water trip last week
They pulled into Port O'Conner and cleaned the fish
The next day they moved the boat from Port O'Conner to Port Aransas
They were boarded by Texas Wildlife and Fisheries and received a $100 fine - they could have confiscated the filets as well but didn't
The issue is that the WL&F guys have to be able to identify the fish and determine if it is legal size -
i dunno the rules.
we were supposedly fishing "commercially". could catch up to 30 bass for the boat if we were able to, versus 2 apiece for sport.
i think they always fillet on the boat on the way back (you can see we are hauling ass) so that when the boat gets back the people who chartered it can just hop in their car and head home. -
you're welcome... thanks
-
nice fish...

he'd need to find friends, first. forget the rest of it

Beautiful, Jeff.

thankibus muchibus.
one of those days that seem too few and too far between -
Stike...Very classy!
Nice meal! I love my fish grilled direct. Wish we could convince more people not to be so afraid of direct with fish. Did some salmon direct last night, and it was great.
What kind of beurre blanc did you make? Pretty plate, and love the side ideas, too.
Looks like a calm, gorgeous day on the water. Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday. -
Hi LC.
dunno if i ruined it or made just another variation.
It was more a beurre rose' than blanc. I left the shallot in, and while reducing the wine and lemon juice, it turned pink. after that, just whisked in the butter. didn't strain it....
