I baked a birthday cake in the egg today for my wife. Not only is it the first cake in the egg ...but it's the first cake I've baked in my life.
It's the "Double Chocolate Kahlua Cake" recipe that's on this forum. Courtesy Mrs. Kevin Jacques I think.
Very moist cake ..it came out great.

Looks great too!!
Those were called "Dump Cakes" in the 60's, and there's a ton of them out there in different flavor profiles!
Many, many variations on the theme and a real chance to stretch your creativity !
Congrats!I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!! -

That looks great! I have made cookies, bread, ice cream cake but I do not think I have ever made a cake cake. Time to give it a try!

What kind of lump did you use? Everything I've used puts off a smokey flavor.George Foreman? Who?Tim C. Panama City, Fl.Large, Minimax-soon

The key is to wait until the coals are burning clean, I like to give it 45 minutes to an hour before baking. -RP

Well Chubby, Dump cakes are different. There is one where you take a can of cherries and dump, then dump cake mix, then dump some nuts, and last a can of pineapple. Then bake. Is that what you are tinking of?

So it doesn't matter what you use. Just let the smoke clear off. Thanks.George Foreman? Who?Tim C. Panama City, Fl.Large, Minimax-soon

Yeah pretty much, but if you have any left over smoking wood in with the lump, I would remove it before baking. -RP

Hey Tim...
I'll let Hammerz speak for himself...but as a general rule there's a couple thiings to keep in mind!
We bake a lot...and if you're going to try it...(and I gather you don;t want the smokey flavor)?
You need to start with a clean egg and a load of fresh lump! Prior to baking...if your cooking meat...or smoking ...
let your temps run up to 600 or better and clean/burn your egg!
You'll need to let your fire get settled, and established long enough that it's burning "smoke free"....usually 45 mins to 1 hour.
There are lump brands that have a much more subtle flavor... let me know what;s available ,(or where you hale from) and maybe I can suggest one.
Once you get going...there are also a few tricks about placement that will help you get better results!
Let me know If I can help.
Welcome aboard...!!

Now that looks yummy!!Egging on two larges + 36" Blackstone griddle

Molly, perhaps "bundt", he did say it was the in the 60's...
-
I used Royal Oak and got it up to 350 and held it there for about an hour before putting the cake in. There was no smoke flavor at all. It was about 50/50 new charcoal and leftover ..but the last couple things I cooked were with the plate setter.

Nope...!
Ann's Mom has about 15 or 20 of them from waay back then and pulled them out when we were there a few years back doing the chocolate version...(but with coconut tunnels inside)!
But feel free to play again next time...lol!!
