Granite table top/heat issues - question
West Chester Pennsylvania

half inch to 3/4" would be more than enough
despite many warnings about granite cracking due to heat, i've never seen it personally -
Marc, don't worry about it. If he can afford ONE 20' slab, he can afford a replacement.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
MichaelCentral Connecticut -
I'd think a half inch would more than cut it.

Marc,
I'm with Jeff. If my cedar hasn't burned up yet at 5/8"+/- gap, then the granite will fine. the greater concern would be the strength of the thin strips once the hole has been cut, both in front and behind. Many fabricators will imbed a piece of steel in the bottom of the slab, both in front and behind a sink cutout. -
good point, particularly since this is a retrofit; kitchen has been there for years, he's going to have to get the granite guy back out there to cut it on site regardless, so they'll have to address those issues if necessary...happy in the hut

not so fast....
hahaha
funny thing about granite is that it runs thru the same cycles. for a short time a type is uncovered that becomes all the rage. it starts out new and rare. then it floods the market.
we used some in the pru tower lobby and it was "oh my god" rare. two years later it's in the men's room at an Arby's.
then they run out and start pushing a "new" granite
i sold the same sink in porcelain, was in the basement laundry area. -
This is my first go round with it. Cleans up nice. We dealt directly with an importer and there was a lot of variety. Some of it was gaudy as hell.

I understand! I also never put my hot platesetter on my granite top. I don't think its that tough. I'll bet you have never had anything fall down though either.
-
since you brought up the mens room at arbys, was that you I noticed in there with the "wide stance", picking a piece of paper from the floor

I am closer and if that sink is up for grabs I can beat you there short stuff! all friendship is off in the race!
-
no...
it was a remodel. and it was being done while we were doing offices above, which used the same granite....
didn't design the pru lobby... but we certainly jumped on the granite bandwagon in that building, at least for (what i think was) the 49th floor. man, was maybe 1990. what is this? go-back-in-time day on the forum?
i actually did the lobby of 111 Huntington. they botched some stuff in redesign (the wood side loobies/elevator areas), but the waterwall is mine virtually unchanged. although i couldn't get anyone to agree that they ought to spell out "ONE ELEVEN". they went with "111" which just looks stupid on that wall. -
i know. but i promise to tip you NEXT time

I come here to talk about food and the egg and recipes and where to put my egg and where to put my friend's egg and spices for food on the egg and temperatures in the egg and gaskets melting off the egg and all you people can talk about is your own off topic stuff and that really really upsets me and this time I'm reporting all of you to the off topic police

I put a GRANITE top on my table. It is cracked front to back rite where the egg sits.I ain't gonna replace it cause it's still as functional as ever, but OCDC folks may freak out.Just sayin.
-
The exact same thing happened to my granite. Cracked in the front and back of the Egg. I am not replacing it, just live with it.
