Baby Backs - How many racks on small egg?
IMF
Posts: 27
Doing baby backs for the first time this weekend on my small. Planning to pickup a three rack pack from the local wholesale club and use the CWM method... Wondering how many racks I can fit on the small? Anyone have any recommendations on positioning? Pictures would be helpful too. Thanks!

Normally using the Large for ribs, I have only done them on my Small once, and only a single rack cut in half.
I'm interested to see the replies to this. -
Yeah, I've never seen anyone do ribs on a small... but that's all I've got to work with so I'm hoping I can cram it full - finding a way to fit 3 racks would be great.
I've got a platesetter, regular grate and 14.5" grate from a Weber Smokey Joe with 4" bolts to raise it up to the felt line for raised direct cooks. Gonna try to get creative... will probably pickup a rib rack too. -
We have done a "three-pack" on the small BGE. The untrimmed slabs are cut in half and positioned vertically in a vee-rack. Either one or two of these racks of ribs (the ones on the outermost slots in the vee-rack) always have to be curled back toward the center of the dome. It is always a very tight fit in the beginning of the cook and the thermometer has to be pulled almost all the way out of it's hole or it will interfere with closing the dome. They have always turned out well.

Seeing the set up you;re using...the best ezy to cook that 3 pack is to stand them up and coil them ...(securing them with a toothpic at the ends! I've done this cook a few times on the Small and it works fine...(but Id rotate the inners with the outers about half way thru the first coupla' hours)!
Saucing them at the end, (using the Small) is a one and done... then move to the next rack...if you know what I'm saying.
Good Luck...!!I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!! -

I have only tried two on the small - cut in half and skewered

Probably could fit three by:
Cut a third rack in half
Lean one half against the skewered ribs in the back and one in front
At the time I didn't have a PS for the small - put two fire bricks wrapped in foil between the firebox and the firering.
Good luck with it. -
Thanks, that's great. I knew there had to be a way to get 3 racks on there.
-
Sounds like standing them up is the way to go. I might sauce one or two of the half racks, but the rest may be gone before I can get them back on there... thanks!
-
That's an interesting way to do them - coiled up in a little circle. Seems like they would split once they started getting really tender. May have to give this a try and see how it works.

Nice pic, thanks. Guess I could skip buying a v rack and just use some skewers...
-
that's four racks, my friend

(but two slabs) -
I can do 3 racks on this setup.

4-5 halves in the rack and 1-2 across the top of them. It works like a charm.
My 3 will be laying flat on the large
-
Is there enough space to cut them in half and stand them up on end? In which case you could get 4 racks.
-
very nice, that seems easy enough. thanks for the pic.

Busted on a technicality

How many wibs make a wack?
One wib don't make a wack - it makes a wib
Two wibs don't make a wack - it makes a wibetizer
Three wibs don't make a wack - it makes a Wibage à trois
Four wibs make a wee wack
-
Still just a third, Frank.

Your method will easily do 3 racks
-
great idea frank!
