Egghead Friend Trying To Register

A long time friend and now an Egghead called me a number of times since Eggtoberfest 2009 to say he was having trouble registering. He asked for advice and I mentioned that he should wait a few days, check his email junk folder and all the other normal suggestions from others regarding this on-going problem.

He finally, after repeated requests, spoke to someone and was not at all pleased with the results. He called to tell me he was totally frustrated and no longer wanted to even register. But he still wanted to be able to post as a guest from time to time. He said he tried it and it didn't work either.

I knew he was coming to visit me so we decided to wait until he got here and I would walk him through the process. My thoughts were that he was not all that computer savvy and may have overlooked an important step or two.

Well, it turns out that he IS pretty computer savvy. Not only that but as I attempted to assist him in registering I got the same results that he got each time we tried.

So once again he resigned himself to defeat and asked if I could walk him through the posting as a 'guest' steps.

We followed the instructions completely a number of times and it rejected the post each time.

I even entered my handle and it would not accept me.

Now I am also frustraited and a bit peeved that something so routine as registering for a Forum is so difficult, even for those of us who are considered very computer savvy.

I would urge you to both simplify the registration process and correct the obvious problem with Guest posting or do away with it altogether.

    Spring Chicken,

I'm not sure what the original registration problem might be; however, we are having issues with "guest" posing of late. It is definitely no longer permitted to post as a guest using an existing forum handle.

And, in an effort to curb abuse, we have changed some configuration settings related to guest posting, but these measures have proved both ineffective preventing guest abuse and inconvenient for our legitimate guests.

The Internet is a public place, and it is difficult to completely protect the forum from occasional chaos w/out introducing inconvenient, and often only partially effective at best, security measures.

We are still working on the issues; and, apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I forwarded it to my friend along with a little history on the issues of mandatory registration vs voluntary registration, guest posting and other attempts to resolve the problem.

At least he should know that you haven't singled him out to pick on.
