Wal-Mart for Royal Oak lump?

I'm in Atlanta and the last two Wal-Mart's I've been to don't have the Royal Oak. One of the stores I know has carried it in the past. It seems like everything's gone to a Kingsford brand there with no lump charcoal. This seems like an effort on Kingsford's part to lock Royal Oak out of the market. Could that be true or am I too much of a conspiracy theorist?

I really don't like the big box store mentality of what seems to be a "one brand" option or leave it philosophy.

If anyone in Atlanta knows of a store that sells RO lump, please let me know. I'm interested in buying some. By the way, I'm not opposed to buying the BGE brand at my local ACE hardware, but having some choices is nice.

    check Menards...green bags...8 lbs.
Also, check your the generic or house brands at your local stores against The Naked Whiz's site. Lots of different brands are just rebranded RO (like BGE).

I am in Florida and the Wal-Mart near me has RO, $6.37 for 10# bag, bought some yesterday.
I don't know what supermarkts you have in Atlanta, but if Kroger is there, they have RO under their label and Publix has it under their "Greenwise" label.
    Hope this helps B)

Oh, I wish we had Menard's in our area. We have Lowe's and Home Depot for this type of store. I did check at Lowe's and they have Cowboy lump. I believe that I've read enough about it to strike it off my shopping list and leave it on the shelf.

I'll check the Naked Whiz. I thought I had this figured out. I've used many different brands and thought the price and quality of the RO at Wal-Mart seemed to be a good balance. Maybe RO has some brands I don't know about.

Thanks Frank for that tip - we've got Publix and Kroger up here. I've used the Kroger brand and liked it. I'll compare the pricing and availability of it with the BGE lump.

Here the publix brand is $5.97 [I think] for an 8.8 lb bag, don't ask me how they came up with that size.
I buy the Kroger brand when I am in Cinicinnati and it is about the same, $6.+ for 10lb. Way cheaper than BGE :cheer:
    Glad I could help :)

Kroger's lump is around $5.80 or so for 8.8 lbs. Got a couple of bags the other day for $5.32. It seems to work just fine.

Same here in Columbia, SC on the Greenwise. Naked Whiz gave it a great review and I have no complaints. I pickup three 8.8# bags for about $18 vs BGE at $23.50 for a 20#.

The Super WM on Hamilton Mill in northern Gwinnett County always has it. I just bought 6 bags Sunday.

FWIW, if you are in the St Charles, MO area, Green's Farm and Home in Lake St Louis (on hwy N), has Fire King lump, 20# bag, for $12.50. The local BGE dealer is selling 20# bag of BGE lump for $20, and 20# bag of "Redneck" lump for $18.

Don't let the reports fool ya into not trying Cowboy lump. There's nothing wrong with it. I use it off and on with Royal Oak. It may not be as superior as Royal Oak if you want to get down to weighing ash and seeing how long it will burn, but with normal cooking including low and slows you will not know the difference. I have gotten bags with floor scraps in it before but it has been one piece, few and far between. If I have Royal Oak on the shelf side by side with Cowboy I look at the price. Same price? I buy the RO. Cowboy on sale a few bucks cheaper? I buy the Cowboy. Try a bag. If you don't like it you're out 10 bucks. If you like it then you have another brand to buy when RO's not available. Good luck.

Super Walmart on Memorial Drive where the old Avondale Mall was. They have lots of it. Bought two bags last week.
  • For what it is worth -- Local ( North Carolina ) Wallie world has RO @ $6.37 for 10#... along with four different Kingsford sizes and varieties. Ask to talk with your manager at Wallie world to see if they will order it. Each store does their own order placement.

If you have GFS around you. they have Royal Oak lump in their own package, about $13 for a 20 pound bag. the store here in Michigan says they have it year round and if they don't they can get it next day for me.

I'll have to give the Cowboy lump a try. I've only passed it up based on the hearsay that has been around. I did find that I liked the Wicked Good (Weekend Warior) except that it had some VERY large pieces in it. My impression of it was better than what some had written about it.

I'm guessing that we should be coming into the season of the greatest demand for lump. My goal is to stock up to get through the busiest of time of "egging". I'm new to this game and don't want to run out of lump at the wrong time - :woohoo: The large egg I have was a gift to me in March and it hasn't slowed down yet. My wife is glad she gave it to me because it means she cooks less and gets to eat better. I really thinks she likes it when I come in smelling like smoke!!

i agree with rolling egg. there isn't anything wrong with cowboy, especially if that is all you can find locally. there are options that are a lot worse. as for flooring pieces--a couple of years ago there was a debate raging here about that, and someone contacted cowboy's factory who said that the flooring pieces they used were not scraps from prefinished flooring. therefore, unfinished oak flooring lump is the same as any other oak lump except it has been run through a sawmill and shaping machine before it made it to the lump processing facility!

8.8 lb is 4 kg. several other lump mfrs are doing the same thing. maybe it gives them some kind of guilt reduction to downsize the bag to a round number (of kilos, in this case) and charge the same as it was priced when the bag contained 10 lb.

I don't want to sound more stupid than normal, but my local WM has the RO next to the beer and jerky and none to be found in the garden center with the Kingsford. :)

Check out Ingles for The Original Charcoal Company Charcoal. 10 pounds bags for only $5.37 ($1 cheaper then RO). Burns %20 longer and virtually no VOC's when starting, really. Better bargain than RO IMHO.

Hmmmm - I guess I'll have to go back to WM and look in the beer section for the RO. Now that'll be like punishment!!!

Cowboy is fine, but keep in mind that it starts up FAST. If you go in the house for 10 minutes to get your meat ready you may come outside and find that your temperature is up at 650 already... Cowboy is a great lump for quick after-work cooks because it's so quick to light and gets hot fast.

I also find that Cowboy has a very neutral aroma, and that because it is less dense than other lumps you'll burn through a given volume of lump quicker than other lumps.

walmart keeps charcoal in two different places. i found the royal oak over in the garden center.
