I am on the brink of purchasing my first green egg...but I live in a neighborhood where things sometimes grow legs. Will I be able to secure my egg somehow? Bolts...chains etc?

Thanks

Weigh of the Egg will be a big deterrent!

I've considered the same problem. I considered running a chain or cable from the rear hinge to a slab of concrete under the Eggs. However, I decided that was a sign that would say "Take me if you can!" So I decided that keeping them inconspicuous, and 60 feet from the edge of the yard across a soft lawn would deter anyone from making a grab and run. And, moreover, they don't look all that fancy compared to a big shiny gasser.

You could always tie your Egg to a trigger but then you would probably go to jail and be sued if you took the thief out. Not like the old days.

I always worry about mine walking off in spite of living in a fairly secure neighborhood for over 20 years.

I don't know of anyone ever posting that their Egg was stolen from thier home. Seems that campers and custom cooking trailers are popular though.

i worry about this as well because i leave my egg outside my garage on the back side of my house. i don't live in a high theft neighborhood (if you discount the kids that always steal my halloween and christmas decorations every year).

i just cross my fingers. i'd cry for real if someone took my egg.
  • A large weights 160 lbs. That, and have decent hone owners insurance should be enough for you to sleep at night.

probably not a good idea to file an insurance claim for the theft of a BGE. fisrt of all, it's subject to the deductible (which may be higher than the egg) and secondly, theft claims are chargable, meaning your homeowners insurance would go up for the loss.

If you're really concerned about it, put it in a nest, build a little shed/box to roll it in and out of, bolt that to your deck or patio, and put a study lock on the door. Not foolproof, but keeps it out of sight when you're not around.

If someone wants something bad enough it will get stolen. Bolt cutters are not that expensive and will go through most anything a home user would use to secure the egg or anything else for that matter.

Not many people know what an egg is, it's big, heavy and somewhat hard to move.

Use a motion security light close buy if you don't already have one. Put the egg in a larger table with removable or no wheels.

There is an old saying - 'sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze'. If you have a problem that is what you are going to have to do.

If a thief is looking for something they can convert to cash possibly an egg isn't an ideal target.

Get an XL. If they can walk off with that they deserve it. B)

You can go to an industrial wire rope company and get a stainless steel twisted rope with a loop at each end. Insert the rope through the lower vent and up through the egg and then out the top. Secure to some fixed object with a good lock.
Xena makes a very good disc lock with a motion sensor coupled to a very loud alarm, which can be used with one of their cables to secure the egg.
Pacsafe is another option. They produce a stainless steel mesh bag that is intended to secure backpacks at terminals (ever needed to go to the men's room while in possession of a fully loaded Dana Designs?) and would work with a BGE that has been removed from the nest/table.
Other than that you can cook a meal or two for the local thugs, informing them that if the egg disappears so do the delicious meals. :woohoo:  :P

You could always chain a dog to your egg and feed the dog food off the egg. Then maybe the dog would bite potential thieves. :woohoo:

If someone want's it badly enough, they are gonna get it. I have a "Protected by Glock" sign on mine and it has worked to this point. In all honesty, just buy the egg and enjoy it. If someday it grows legs it will be a very bad day, but to not get one and enjoy it would be worse in my opinion. It is a fabulous cooker and a hell of a lot of fun to use. Go get it. :)

I agree with Grandpas, not many people even know what an Egg is. I think the weight would be a pretty good deterrent, that coupled with the fact that there is no soild ground to roll it away, so they would have to actually carry it. I'm pretty sure they might drop it at some point so I have a 50 50 chance of it staying intact or becoming unusable :pinch:

the average dirt bag has no idea what it is and the scumbags that he might try to sell it to are just as clueless.... even most dirtbags don't steal gas grills and they have wheels...lol....i don't think you have to worry too much.... build it into a table.... problem solved....rr

  • When I got my egg about a year ago I had the exact same worries. My wife and I live in a fourplex and our street is lined with rentals as well. I considered chaining it down. But people really don't know what it is. I have done overnight cooks for 16+ hours and while the first cook was nerve racking going to bed for a few hours without checking on it, you just learn that one, its extremely heavy, and two, when doing a low heat cook at around 250 degrees it still is pretty hot making rolling or carrying it away that much tougher. If i where you, keep it in your backyard with low visibility and just use it. Its not a flat screen, camera or laptop computer and people are not looking to steal them. The only thing I have ever had stolen from me was a bag of lump charcoal and it was later returned.
