I need to get myself a new thermometer. What are you guys using that does well? I am thinking I need on with 2 temp probes... 1 for meat, one for dome temp. I would love to know what is working for you guys. Its one thing to read reviews, another to hear from people using them.

I use the Maverick ET-73. Has Pit and Meat probe and remote unit you bring inside with you. Set alarms for meat and pit. It works great for me! Fairly inexpensive too! between 30 and 40 bucks depending on where you get it. Try Amazon.

I agree. Once I got my new probes the Maverick 73 works great

I've had good luck with the Maverick ET-73. I know some folks have had trouble with it, but mine has worked well. I understand that it's very important to keep the wiring dry. That's to say don't put the probes in the dishwasher!

Wisconsinegghead, I use the Maverick ET-73.

I have had it for some time now but, I have over heated the standard pit and meat probes so I replaced them with the high heat meat probes. The standard probes are only go for 410° and if you immerse them in water they can go bad. You also need to be careful not to route them over the direct heat source. Simply route them across the base and plate setter leg. Some eggheads even use foil to protect them. I have burned out my standard probes several times so I suggest having spares on hand. I did take it one step further, I purchased two high heat probes for the meat (they are good for 570°)and I used one for the meat probe and one for the pit probe. It may just be me but, I have not burned a high heat probe yet. ;) Tim

i got tired of the maverick and use the guru for longer cooks. i gave my thermopen to the older pit and bought one for the younger one ,, i can use them if needed BUT.......
for day to day use i bought this

    http://www.thermoworks.com/products/handheld/mtc.html

    and added these:

High Temp Alligator Clip Oven Probe

    http://www.thermoworks.com/products/probe/tc_hightemp.html

    Miniature Needle Probe

    http://www.thermoworks.com/products/probe/tc_penetration.html

i use the unit as a thermopen . it sits on the counter. i use the dome thermo for dome and the alligator clip at the grid. the mini needle probes stay in the meat and i just move the unit from one to the other,,
seems a pia but it is accurate and works for me ,, i will but another mini thermocouple and a smokehouse probe as well,,
