Pilgrimage to Loney Mecca

For all you loney lovers out there……..I recently made a pilgrimage to the Baloney mecca, Bologna, Italy. When I told our cooking instructor that I needed photos of baloney / mortadello to show my BBQ forum, she was appalled. She stated that mortadello was not made with inferior cuts of meat, but had quite a bit of fat added to achieve the smooth and silky texture. She said Bologna got a bad rap because of American Baloney.
Well, on with my tribute to loney (mortadella)…..
The Bologna train station

The salumeria where we purchased our loney / mortadella

Honing in on the loney:

Loney on the left!!!! (and some uber lardo on the right)

Some sliced loney

A loney anitpasto (with some prosciutto and cheese in a stuffed fried ravioli.........yum.

Hope ya’ll enjoyed this pilgrimage to the mecca.
P.S. Some loney on our picnic plate with some bresaola, salami,parmesan-reggiano and pecorino cheese, pesto, Pulgian Bread (and a very inferior porchetta sandwich which we pitched) in Florence in the Piazza Santa Cruce on market day.

I hope this suffices for my initiation to join the exclusive loney club.

Wow, looks like you had a real adventure for the ol' taste buds. Great looking breads also! Sausage, cheese, bread, wine, fine art and mortadella. You lucky gal!
Nice pic's. :cheer: -
Julie, I learned that wine and olive oil were both good for pedicures, lol.. :woohoo: :woohoo:
Oh wait, I learned that from your demonstration at the Sunshine fest.
In all seriousness, I learned quite a bit. I learned a new way of making pasta without adding flour during the roll out procedure. I also have an appetizer in mind for the minifest.....if green figs are in season (and it's not the typcial prosciutto wrapped figs. I also learned that I have to stay away from the jewerly stores in Florence, lol. -
Massimo.......those Latinos, gotta watch em.
BTW, have your eyes recovered from your t-shirt photography? -
Rather flat looking, Wish I had had a 3D camera... :woohoo:
-
The tile landscape also shows the BBQ region of Italy in the mountains. You can plainly see the smoke rising from over a dozen pit smokers and brick ovens.
-
Bacchus, I snapped a couple pics of you at the Vatican museum.

Rebbeca, you are so right. S-E-I-T-Z spells bologna. I was 7. My "loney commercail".

Mike -
Clay, you are so astute!
I don''t think the inhabitants of Pompeii or Herculaneum personally liked being BBQ'd. The tile work was really a work of art.....just like your woodwork and egging!
-
Gosh Ron you've lost some weight mi amigo....anyway cheers!!!!!!
-
Rebecca,, you could of just come to Melbourne and Richard would have put out a loney buffet :pinch:  Nice pics, glad you had a good time

Hi Jason, Glad to see you on the forum. Welcome. There are some real Baloney afficianados on this forum. If you ever attend a fest, someone will probably smoke some 'loney' as it is known by the trade. If you are interested give RichardFl, Hoss, CookinBiker or any other loney loon a call.
-
Thanks Rebecca, Maybe I will get to see some at the Pittsburg Fest? Closest one to me so I will definatley make it, wish there was one in Ohio!
-
