CHIMINEA

My old metal fire pit on my deck is getting rusty and becoming an eye sore! So..I have started to look at the BGE chiminea. Really don't know much about them - just thinking it would be pleasing to the eye as it would match my egg and it would probably last forever!
Questions: Would the Chiminea be OK on a wood deck? Seems like while searching this site for old posts - I read that you should not have on a deck! Seems like it would be OK since it has a screen on the front!
-Would the fire have to burn out or can you shut it down to smother the fire?
Also, if you own one any and all feedback it appreciated!
Thks

the reason they say it shouldn't be on the deck is becaue of the fire itslef and having blowups with pieces of wood flying out and laying on the deck. We have a firepit that comes with a mesh screen that you put on top, but i still dont put it on the deck, you never know what crackling and popping is going to come from the wood, but i am sure there are people that do put them on the deck, if it were me i wouldnt unless i put brick or concrete pavers down.

I use mine not on a wooden deck but on a concrete patio. with the spark arrestor that sits between the cone and the firebox and the mesh cover for the front i see literally no sparks and no wood falling out of it . the only time i ever have ashes or embers fall out of it is when i overload it and have to open the front up to stoke the fire. I think with a little extra care it wouldnt be a big deal to put it on a wooden deck. We really enjoy ours and it does a great job heating

I wouldn't advise putting it on a wooden, just as the otheres have said....the screen on the front contains things very well, but it also blocks out some of the heat, so many times I will burn it without the front screen on at all...the spark arrestor mentioned that goes between the cone and the base will be short lived, mine burned through in only a couple of seasons....there is no way to "smother" the fire with the large front opening..also if you live in a very cold climate, you might not be happy with the amount of heat as opposed to a fire pit...I use mine a fair amount of the time..

i agree with the others.. the spark arrestor works and i usually burn mine with out the screen in the front.. i would not put it on a wooden deck with out a concrete backer board underneath. not being able to close it down and going to bed with a lit fire on the deck and you being heavily 'medicated' seems to me a recipe for disaster..

bill, why don't you post a pic of your Mini's, umm, accident?
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
