Couldn't get into eggfest - what are they like?

I'm new to the Egg, have only cooked 3 times so far (brisket, jerk chicken, burgers), definitely have a lot to learn but have loved everything so far! :)

Shortly after the first time I used it I learned that the place my wife bought the Egg was having their first Eggfest (Carolina Eggfest), but was really disappointed when I was told in the next breath that it was by advance registration only and no more people would be allowed in. I assume there was a good reason for that, maybe having to do with crowd control, or the ratio of cookers to non-cookers or something. But I really would have enjoyed just watching how experienced people build the fire, arrange the meat, control the heat and the smoke, etc., and I was really frustrated that I couldn't get in. I had supposed it would have been a great learning experience for a guy just getting started.

I know this is a vague question, but for another year, can anyone give me a better idea than I have now about what these are like, what tends to be happening, whether cookers tend to be excitedly competitive (and therefore secretive) or open with newbies about how to do what they're doing, etc.? I'm wowed by how helpful this forum is, and maybe by next year I won't even be interested in the Eggfest, I don't know. But I'd still like to have a better sense of what it was, and whether I might want to try to go another year.

    I'm sorry you couldn't get in to the carolina fest; many others have limited entry as well. I have been egging for a year now and have been to two fests, my third and fourth are on the books for June and September! I have found the feats to be like the forum - totally open and welcoming. If there is any competition or secrecy, it's all in good fun. I'm guessing you'll still want to go next year! Happy egging!

    The cooks will tell and show you ANYTHING you wanna know.These ain't comps .they're fests to celebrate the egg and help anyone that has any question. B) Sign up early.You'll LOVE it! :)

    As a newbie I just attended my first eggfest two weeks ago here in Austin. I was amazed at the large attendance, both cookers and non-cookers. The weather was perfect, the venue was great and everyone was eager to share great food, recipes, cooking tips & techniques and maybe even a secret or two. There were even informal gatherings both before and after the event which seemed to be for cookers only although I'm sure anyone was welcome. Can't wait to do it again, maybe even as a cooker next time. You really should try to attend one as soon as you can to help jump start your BGE eggsperience.

    I've had my egg for over a year - and this year was my first eggfest (Waldorf).

    I would definitely suggest attending - especially if you're fortunate to have one nearby and .....even if its not nearby - still try to go!

    First, let me say that the fests are primarily made up of the good folks here on the forum. (not to imply that there are bad ones) :laugh: . You can expect the help, excitment, encouragement, and fun that you read about here, to be abundant at a fest as well. Not to mention the incredible food. If you spend much time reading and getting to know folks here, It's a lot of fun then getting to meet them in person.

    You'll get to sample foods from Canada to Mexico and from west coast to east.

    One more thing, when you do decide to go, sign up to cook something. Not that you won't have a good time just walking around sampling food, but jumping in and getting involved is where you really get to know folks. I guess as you can tell, for me it's not just about the food but about the relationships you develop along the way. :) I've met some really nice people and can't wait to see them next time.

    Next time you see a before, after or after-after party....wonder over...you may stumble away, but you'll have a big'ol smile on your face.

    Many thanks to all who replied!!! It sounds like something I'll definitely try to get into next year. Maybe I'll feel differently when I've done some more cooking, but I can't quite picture having the nerve to cook my first time, but it'll be a year away -- we'll see.

  • If you live close enough, go to Eggtoberfest in Tucker Ga., in October. Then you will really be hooked. You need to get your tickets when they start selling them in August - watch the forum for it. And no, don't cook at your first fest, just wonder around and taste and taste and taste.

    Good advice

    I cooked all day and then at the after party my first Eggtoberfest. Blackened filets from 23 redfish. B)

    Didn't get to visit as much as I liked. Cut it back the next three eggfest but still doing too much.
