Well, soup's on. Did the egg add anything or could this have been made on the stovetop? Well, I have done it on the stovetop before but cooking on the egg is much more fun. Did it add flavor? Probably not beyond the egged leftovers. Would you do it again? Maybe in November, that's stew weather. Did you learn anything? Yes, I like stew, I like beans and I like cookin' on the egg.

Looks great. It's always more fun on the egg

Did you cook it in the clay pot? I have a couple of clay pots ( a tagine with a dome and Japanese donabe) and I may try using them on the egg.
If you cooked with the top off would that add a smoky flavor? -
It was cooked the whole time with the top off. I suspect the only two ways to get it smokier would be adding wood chunks or liquid smoke and I am not sure I could tolerate the liquid stuff. Tasted pretty good just as it was with a little more salt and a shake of Frank's Red Hot.

I agree its more fun on the Egg and this could well be one of those cold Fall day cooks.

It looks great! When I do stew or soup I toss a few chunks of presimmon wood on the lump and leave the lid of the container I'm cooking the food in at least partially cracked. Get plenty of smoke flavor in the dish that way.

Thanks JL, that's good to know. I will give it a try.

I agree with Jlockhart, I always put some wood smoke on it, leave it uncovered, and just stir it up every so often.
Your stew looks great. That is one cool pot, and lovely to serve from, too.
You have the makings of a FREAK egghead once you cook 3 meals a day on the egg!@!!!!

love rotten pot, best thing with the egg is to save a piece of chicken, pork etc from your daily cooks and freeze til you have all the ingrediants. we never had the stew, was made it with whole big chunks of meat and separated into meat, beans, a lite soup, etc at the table.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
