Meat Prices

I went to Costco today to pick up some meat, but left empty handed because it seemed their prices were a little high. Price for Flank Steak was $5.49/lb and Tri-Tip was $4.99/lb. Maybe is just that I'm new to Colorado, but in California these cuts were less expensive. What is everyone else paying on average?

    Shaun,
Not too sure where in California you were from but here in the Central Coast tri-tip comes in two grades - select ($2-$4/lb) and choice ($4-$7/lb). The low prices are for select grade which is sold untrimmed meaning about 30% of its weight is fat cap thus making the $2/lb look like a good buy. COSTCO only sells trimmed choice tri-tip so the price you quote of $4.99/lb is a good deal.
  • In my neck of the woods, the chain supermarket non-sale price for flank steak is around $6.99/lb. Of course, careful shopping yields bargains, but it's no longer an inexpensive cut.

Those are the prices at Costco in So. Calif. I paid $7.99/lb for rib eyes. Even the inexpensive cuts are getting a bit pricey.
